Sauteed Cabbage & Onions with Garlic

Quick and easy flavorful side dish.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Shred or chop cabbage and set aside.
  2. Over medium heat sauté onions in oil until golden brown, stirring often, add garlic and sauté for just one minute.
  3. Add cabbage and cook, stirring frequently, until cabbage is limp and turns a brighter green (about 5 minutes).
  4. Sprinkle on Splenda and continue to cook, stirring often, until cabbage takes on an amber color and begins to brown lightly (about 25 more minutes).
  5. Season to taste.

For LCHF/Keto diets: 3.6 gr less carbs if sweetener is omitted. Save another 1 gr carb if a tsp garlic powder is used instead of 3 fresh cloves. That would make it about 13 carbs. Use i/2 cup chopped onion instead of a large onion to save about 8 gr more carbs--only 5 carbs left.

How times have changed! Use olive or coconut oil or butter or even avo oil for good healthy fat in LCHF or banting lifestyle and ditch the Splenda....

replace the oil with broth (I'd use 1/4 cup or more)..then you have the best of both worlds.

I halved the olive oil and skipped the splenda - but Sauteed Cabbage and Onions are one of my favorite dishes..Thanks for reminding me of that!

For low calorie diets ditch the olive oil. I have been doing diets with not much emphasis on calories, and the best bet for a recipe like this is non-stick spray and eliminate the fat and especially high calories. Most of us really doing low calorie dieting have to really be careful with the olive oil no matter how healthy it is...

The fat to carbohydrate ration is abit high for most Jenny Craig recipes...I've noticed that most Jenny craig foods show a 4 - 7 times as many carbos to fat for most foods...HOwever, deleting the olive oil or simply making only 1/3 the amount would markedly reduce the amount of fat although the rations would be the same...The total calorie count for such a filling side dish, or main dish in my case, is not too bad...

Why wouldn't you just use a non-stick spray to start the cooking and then lower the heat to get the consistancy you want. It would save 160 calories from the dish.
