wholefoodnut's Journal, 08 Jan 16

I just spent the last hour reading the entire new US dietary recommendations. Much of it actually made sense to me, I was surprised. I do think they did soften the recommendation statements etc to pacify the big and processed food industry and left some things in to cater to them. If you read the entire thing it's much improved in many ways from the previous ones recommending lots of vegetables and fruit. They are also pushing low fat foods which I cannot agree with.

Time to get some exercise in, put away the mountain of vegetables and fruit I bought today, and log my dinner.

Big Issue! What is the difference between added sugar and natural sugar, remove the fiber, and sugar is sugar. An Orange has fiber, Orange Juice does not, Orange Juice is the same as a can of Coke.

Some of the nutritionists are saying they didn't give a nod to the new medical findings on red meat. I need to go read it. Off to do that now.

It was interesting as the news was only grabbing a quote here and there. I certainly do not agree with all of it. I did like that they were finally promoting lots of vegetables and fruit and differentiated between whole grains and refined carbs. Majohn, I do not do low carb and eat a lot of fruit, usually whole but do drink a little bit of juice off and on (better for me than drinking beer). Johanne, I don't eat much meat and am working on decreasing that even more. It actually makes me sick to my stomach if I eat more than a small amount.

I eat very little meat. There's the expense and it seems to be the only food that causes pain with my hiatal hernia. Bread used to, but the gluten free trade-outs don't do the same thing. Odd.

Haven't read it in detail, but had the same impressions as you after hearing 're-caps' of the changes on the news -- some good improvements, still some work to be done (and definitely some k(c)owtowing going on)!

Yep, we have to stay educated and do what is healthy for us. One man's meat is another man's poison.
