wholefoodnut's Journal, 14 Aug 17

I have the week off so when I am off I often treat myself to a different breakfast than my workday morning smoothie. This am scrambled eggs (local "backyard' chicks) whole grain homemade sourdough toast topped with a tomato and lime basil marinated with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

The weather is absolutely perfect so will be working outside on my chicken coop much of the day after getting a few needed jobs done inside. Since I bruised my knee yesterday resulting in a very swollen knee I may have to go a bit easy on it today. It is feeling much better this am after a night's rest. Need to get moving and not waste a day off.

Sounds like you have a plan and are prepared to work that plan. Be careful with your knee...don't overdo!

HCB, on my coop I had planned an access door and a ventilation window above it so I had a 2x4 brace between them. Turns out it was the perfect height to bang my head reaching inside the coop ;(--I decided to make a taller door and no window so needed to take the cross brace out. Took the screws out and it was wedged in there pretty tight. I was sitting on the floor of the coop doing this. Hit it hard with my hand a couple times before it gave and smack and an end right into my knee. Two more inside things to do and then heading outside. Movin kinda slow this am.

Progressing on the coop, still more to do. Have had to resort to asthma meds as the humidity skyrocketed to 80% thankfully only 80 degrees. The first project pounding those supports into the ground which took awhile due to breaks. Now working on the "foundation" and the anti dig skirting around the base to protect the chickens from predators ie: coons, my dogs, possums, fox etc. Asthma drug and cool down break. Well back to work, nice that we now have a nice breeze, that will help.

Ow! Make sure you ice that tonight!🙋🏻I hope the coop's going together well. Maybe you can make the door have ventilation built into it to replace the window being taken out? Put a ventilation window into the door? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Your plans always sound fun.

Smprowett, I am going to wait until I get the roof framing on before I cut another window. I think the where the supports will land I will have plenty. If not there is a place above the low smaller cutout for the chicken door for a window. The other low one is where the nest box will fit in, Enough ventilation from what I've learned is key to keeping chickens healthy both winter and summer. Coop photo is on the next journal entry.
