wholefoodnut's Journal, 11 May 15

made a yummy curried lentil stew for dinner, I did use the new to me spices I bought on Saturday. Forgot to start the rice to go with it. I quick cooked some Chinese noodles. LOL there is a reason rice goes with curry!! The noodles certainly didn't! Put some rice on to cook for using with leftovers.

Cool and windy so it felt pretty cold, hoping the wind will dry things out. Figure work outside tomorrow after work. Did a few exercises on my ball 8000+ steps. Didn't do any kettle ball or weights as my back was hurting, pulled something a bit so today is a mostly rest day though it feels better if I keep walking, sitting is not nice to it.

The evening went by too fast.

WFN, as usual you are eating well and staying active ... life is good! The weather is back to Spring-like here instead of feeling like the middle of Summer (the hottest it will get this week is just under 65F). Lots of rain last night - wish I had started my planting because it would have been great for them. Have a great day! :)

That is the problem with brown rice - it takes so long to cook!

What spices did you get? I made curried potatoes for tonight's dinner. I've started making 2-3 cups of rice at a time, keeping it in the fridge and using it as needed. Then when I run out I just throw more in the cooker.

I usually make one cup of dry, plenty for just me for several meals. I had my lentil stew with rice for lunch yesterday, much better than noodles ;)). The spices are amchur (not really a spice but made from dried mango) and asfoetida. I love curried potatoes!

I've heard of asfoetida, but I've never used it. How did it taste? I've never even heard of the other does that just add a sweetness?

Amchur adds a tangy citrus fruit flavor, it's not really sweet but smells sweet, it's also supposed to help tenderize meat, it is made from dried green mango. The asfoetida smells awful but from what I have read it adds umami to dishes, helps to reduce flatulence, and changes taste as it is cooked. It tastes really bitter if you taste the powder and you use just a tiny bit.

Did you use curry powder? Or does curried mean something else? I love lentils and usually cook them with spinach and onions.

Deb in this I did not use curry powder however the spices would be those used in a curry powder. I used to think I didn't like curry because I'd only had the commercial curry powder added to American casseroles. I did make a masala spice mix for this that I made plenty to use in future dishes. I'll post the recipe in the group It's a healthy lifestyle not a diet I started a recipe section. I don't have time right now have to get ready for work. The cookbook doesn't have the spices and is too confusing with changing measurements to servings.
