I've been reading a little about exercising and loosing weight.

I've been exercising a lot and it doesn't seem to be contributing much, or at all.

After reading a few articles I found that it may stall or be unhelpful to weight loss for a variety of reasons.

I'm going to cool down on the exercise and keep to one day of 50mins on an elliptical machine then have two days off, see if I have better results that way.

I preface this with the fact that I am not in anyway a dietician or personal trainer and this is purely my experience and knowledge that I have picked up from people I trust :) Ive heard that weight loss is actually a lot more to do with diet and eating habits rather than exercise. While exercise certainly helps (and is important for general health) its about a 70/30 split. Plus working out builds muscle which is denser than fat, so will weigh more for the amount of “size” (obviously though muscle will have more definition and look better than the same weight of fat). That said this is mostly my regime when I actually get my bum out of bed that early and I mostly do free weights with a little cardio, and additionally every body is different so you cant always apply one set of rules to another body. Its good your still keeping the exercise and just taking it a bit easier, as long as you are comfortable and not pushing yourself past your bodies ability to repair you should be ok, but if your unsure it may be worth speaking to a trained professional to get a good plan sorted. Also I found that once you hit a certain body fat percentage your loss starts to plateau as there is less to lose and your body is adjusting to the new you. Either way you seem to be doing really well (better than me anyway!)

thanks mangajohn. my calves are like rocks lol. 70/30 sounds right to me, I'm definitely not loosing as much as I was even though I'm exercising more. I'll cool it down from now on. thanks shah143, I will!

Agreeing with Mangajohn. Virtually everyone plateaus eventually, especially if you've lost a lot. It may mean you need to tweak something, but if you keep pushing forward with good habits you'll continue to lose. It all depends on your eventual goal. Muscle weighs more than fat but also burns more energy. For most people (i.e. wanting to get healthier but not become athletes), cardio and some strength training every other day is better than everyday. Also not an expert, just what I've observed. Let us know how it goes :)

thanks howardsends. There's not really anything left to tweak, otherwise I'd think it was that. I think I'll just be trying this to see now!

Have you watched the BBC 1 program called 'The truth about getting fit'...by Micheal Mosley...the latest research confirms your suspicions of a little high intense exercise (2 mins per week) or NHS active 10 s( 3x 10mins of brisk walking per day) or 7 mins of Pilates per day is much more effective for losing fat and getting fitter!!

I started watching it actually! I should've watched it all. Thanks for that. Every three days sounds good to me then. Thank you!

Hey! Just thought you might like to know that cardio will help fat melt off more than muscle training. I would say don’t do things that are really high intensity to start off with because you’ll struggle a lot and might find it hard to keep wanting to do it if it’s really really hard. Maybe start off just doing what you can, then just keep pushing yourself slowly. I’m not a professional but I’ve been interested in science for my whole life practically and I picked up a LOT of tips when I started dieting many years ago! XD Trying harder this time. I always manage to fall off the wagon eventually and gain but all the things I learnt were really helpful and I did loose a BIG chunk of weight! :)

You might want to look for a guy on Facebook called James Smith-he knows his stuff and doesn’t sugar coat anything-he tells it like it is

I've been looking into HIIT

Definitely recommend HIIT - your body will continue to burn fat after the work out! And you can spend shorter time in the gym!
