northernmusician's Journal, 27 Jun 14

I took the dog to the lake yesterday. The vet of course has told me no road trips, no exercise. I don't care what the vet wants. I want what Ginger wants and all she does now is wander slowly up the beach and wade in up to her shoulders. Not typical for a golden retriever. Sometimes I'm near tears watching her. I figure a good day at the lake that kills her is better than a day of lying around feeling sorry for herself that she survives. It's what I'd want for myself.

My neighbour put down his dog yesterday. It came on 3 days ago. The dog was diabetic and had been on insulin injections for years. Pancreas was shot and liver had cancer. Must be the time of year for dogs. :(

It's a nice day but breezy. That's good. It keeps the black flies and mosquitos at bay. To those of you who think I'm talking house flies, I'm not. I swear these things are where the vampire myth came from. You don't know they were there until you feel the blood trickling down your neck. Horse flies, of course, let you know they're there. They leave a welt about 3/4 of an inch acrosss and a pronounced bump. Summers barely here and the bugs are in full bloom.

On the up side, 2 days ago calipers indicated 13% bf. Yesterday, 14 again. Today 13. It doesn't fit my criteria of 3 days in a row to acknowledge it.

Sorry for the dark post. Those 5 things in my life I spoke of previously are weighing me down, but I should have one of them sorted out next month, and it's the big one.

Have a good day everyone.

My heart is heavy for you and your pup, it's hard seeing them like that. My aunt just found out her Corgi has lymphoma, maybe it is the time of year :( But I agree, a good day at the beach trumps just laying around, I'm sure she was having a great time. ((HUGS))

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, it's so rough to see them going through that. :( I think it's nice that you're letting her do what makes her happy by taking her to the lake. It sounds like she's had a great life full of wonderful memories.

I agree with your philosophy. One day of happiness vs 1 day of solitude and waiting. You surely made her happy. And yourself too. Kudos on maintaining such a tight weight. I'm sure there are many of us here that envy you. Hopefully we'll all get to where you are and are able to maintain as well.

Don't go saying crazy things like it just being the time of the year, one of my boys is very old and we don't need any jinxing. ((Hugs)) I would chose the beach too, you're giving her quality and that's much more important than quantity.

Sorry to hear about your "kids". My Love of My Life had a lymphoma on his neck. So glad you brought her out and about. BTW, Louisiana's flies are almost as big as the monsters in the 50s movies, like The Giant Claw---they can eat your Vampire ones with no problem. We actually never had them this bad before, strange.

I believe it should be quality not quantity on life. (Though having both is good.) What you did was right because it made a quality day for both of you. We have rattlesnakes and my husband is always wanting to restrict our dogs running because of them. We have 42 acres and I think they should get to run every bit of them. It's a chance gotta take so they have quality. I know exactly what you mean about the bugs there. I'm from Petersburg, AK and they ate me alive. Plus I'm especially allergic so my reactions were three times a normal persons. Don't envy you them. Do envy you the water and trees.

Ginger looks like a beautiful dog. Sorry to hear she's not doing well.

Thinking of you, the vet found cancer on Tuesday during exploratory surgery that was not operable so he just put our 9 year old Airedale Terrier Bella to sleep and we didn't get to say good bye, it wouldn't have been fair to wake her up to say good bye and she is not in pain anymore, but we are, my heart breaks for all of us, God Bless!

Perhaps my favorite quote seems apt here: If you can start the day without caffeine, If you can get going without pep pills, If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it, If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time, If you can overlook when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong, If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him, If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend, If you can face the world without lies and deceit, If you can conquer tension without medical help, If you can relax without liquor, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, If you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color, religion or politics, Then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog! —Author unknown

Very well said, TXSnowman. I try daily to be more like my dogs. They are truly one of the best inspirations in life. May be why I have so many.

I hope Ginger gets well. I carried my beloved dog for months when he could not walk, keeping the same walking schedule and I know he appreciated it. I have lost many people but somehow I miss him most...

The water is probably very cooling for her. Glad you have time to do this for her!

Socolova. The dog we had before this one was 'Bear' a corgi, sheltie cross. Excellent temperment but his legs were so short if you didn't cut the grass he looked like a german shephard snail cross working his way across the lawn. Loved that dog. Thanks Share Bear. Ginger is doing well with a higher prednisone dose and is not feeling any pain. The vet says she'll just 'go to sleep' one day. :( Hope you're okay.

Glad you gave her a "good" day. She had fun on her swim, I'll bet, kinda floating. I can picture it.
