chesgreen's Journal, 08 Mar 16

I am 24.5 hours into a a fast. My last food was yesterday at 2:30 PM EST. This is an intended fast with the only thing remotely close to food consumed was a 0 calorie soup broth from a packet that has 1400 mg of sodium of which I split the packet into 2 servings. I had 1/2 for dinner last night at 8:30 PM after a 3.2 mile walk on the treadmill and the other for lunch 2 hrs back which was also after a 2.6 mile walk. The plan is to extend this fast to tomorrow to the 48 hr mark and see what I will do at that time. I still have fuel in my tank. I have released the Kraken.

I have a buddy in the office who has been since January, fasting regularly Mon night last meal until Wed morning next meal and has lost 20 pounds all without exercising. He has also embracing Paleo style eating.

I on the other hand, have stepped up my exercise big time since January, getting better control of my eating by targeting 1800 avg daily calories and lost 14 pounds up until my last weigh in last week.

Granted, although he was heavier to being with than I was in January, you can't dispute facts. His combination is getting better results. I am ok with that. I think I will try a combination of Keto style of eating overall and extended fasts in the beginning of week and continue exercising and share my results.

14 hrs 15 minutes into my fast which was 4:45 AM this morning, I got on the scale and I was already down 2.8 lbs since my weigh in of 246.8 yesterday morning. I can't wait to see what the scale will reflect tomorrow morning. It better be good or else!

Sorry for this long post.

Think long term and don't get discouraged in one day if it doesn't come out good!

Exercise is not necessary for weight loss...it's necessary if you want to maintain muscle mass and improve cardiovascular...but for "weight" loss, not necessary. I prefer Intermittent Fasting (IF) of 16:8, it is sustainable long-term. Typically on a weekend there is one day or another when it is longer than 16hrs. The first rule of Paleo is Low-Carb High-Fat, after that it is avoid grains..no argument there. Where they lose me is avoid Dairy products and Alcohol. Some people react to Dairy, others do not, Alcohol is Alcohol, it will slow your weight loss efforts. 1800 calories is a lot, are you eating for the body you want or the body you have?

@mahjohn, I exercise for many reasons, but not primarily for weight loss. Weight loss takes place in the kitchen, not in the gym. I agree with you on the 16:8 for long term but I will experiment with different fast windows to see what fits for me in the short and mid term. Ultimately, as I get close to my goal weight, I will make the necessary adjustments and set new goals. 1800 calories is a lot? What do you suggest as a daily calorie goal and why?

Depending on your height, skeletal frame type, and body fat %, your "weight" as a man encompass quite a large range. For instance if you are 5'10" have a small skeletal frame, 150-155 is your range for someone large frame, 169 - 173. To these you would add natural padding of fat over the years, however, if there is muscle mass and low body fat %, these numbers go out the window. Take your goal of 185lbs, depending on your age your ideal body fat % will change with age. Subtract your goal body fat % in lbs from your total goal weight. Example: 40yr old man 25% body fat, 185lbs. (185 * .25) = 46.25. (185 - 46.25) = 138.75. ~139 lbs is the Lean Body Mass (LBM), not all muscle, but what you have left once you remove your fat. This is what needs 'feeding' not the fat. Take the LBM (139 in this example), and multiply by 9 = 1251, and then by 11 = 1529. So for a 40yr old man with 25% body fat at 185lbs, his calorie range is 1251 - 1529 calories. Given that calorie counting is fuzzy math to begin with, the 1,800 could easily be 1,900 - 2,000.

LOL - We all need to release the Kraken now and then. (For years I have been looking for an opportunity to say "release the Kraken!" at a suitable moment.)

Way to grind away those calories with the fast, buddy. You'll find that after a fast that length what you've been eating as maintenance feels like a ton of food.

Now home, the scale reads 241.8, six pounds down since yesterday. I told my wife not to cook because food smell is a huge trigger for me. She didn't, HOWEVER, there is McDonald's on the dining room table. Help I think I'm going to quit my fast. Help! I just touched some French Fries.

Back away slowly and carefully. Go outside for a walk.

@Chesgreen, you can't do this alone, the biggest reason people fall is lack of support at home. This can take many forms, maybe their spouse is overweight and doesn't want to be left behind

A friend of mine was telling me about fasting and how it has worked well for her. My only worry is you exercising while fasting. Isn't that dangerous? Considering that the caloric intake is at 0
