wholefoodnut's Journal, 26 Feb 16

Looking back, I used to do journals daily to keep on track. Now it's sporadic. Also everything in your life affects everything else.

As some of you know I've had much going on since the end of last year. So thankful by basement window (broken out by the thieves over Christmas) will be replaced tomorrow finally. It has been a stressful 2 months dealing with that but it's finally settling down. I will install a new back storm door this weekend if the wind eases up (Bent to he#$ by them). I will feel safer having my home more secure. Bars on my basement windows will be an addition this spring sometime, not sure if a security system fits the budget yet.

Between I'm working on getting rid of processed in my life including cleaning, beauty, and health products. I'm working on learning more about essential oils, aroma therapy. and the health affects of herbs that many I love to cook with. Most of my beauty products are all natural, just mascara to go. The more I learn about the chemicals that you put on your body and the affects on your weight and health the less I want to use them. A huge poison in many of them is aluminum. It's another interesting journey all toward better health.

Yes, I have read that underarm products have aluminum...why, I don't know!

I make my own deodorant. Have used this recipe for over a year now.

HCB, it's cheap and works, however is toxic to your body. So much for the chemicals that hurt the body and are still produced and sanctioned. I quit using most of the commercial ones a couple years ago as I was getting itchy rashes. Bought Tom's but it is expensive. A member here suggested coconut oil, baking soda and cream of tarter. I've been using it for over a year. It's more effective than any commercial one I've ever used. I'm going to add some lemon grass essence to a new batch tomorrow as it is a natural anti presperant (spelled wrong) . Reading labels even my eye makeup and foundation have aluminum. scary. How much has my body absorbed over the years?? Also most are made with petroleum. Do you really want to put car oil on your body????? Read labels on everything you use. I've learned that lately.

I have been wearing BareMinerals as makeup for years now. Please don't tell me it is toxic. :( I would like your recipe for deodorant.

Deodorant super easy..learned it from someone on this site. You probably have the ingredients already. About 1/4 cup of coconut oil, heated enough to liquefy it. Add 1 tsp of baking powder and 1 tsp of cream of tarter. I'm adding a few drops lemongrass essential oil to my batch this weekend. Mix it up. Rub it on with fingers. Works better for me than anything else I've ever used and no rashes. No idea on the bare minerals, out of my price range but I've read most of those are good for you. Just made some moisturizer with organic shea butter (bought in bulk for abt $15.00 for 3 pounds 4 oz at the health food store was about $6.000) added a bit of avocado and grapeseed oil and a few drops of tea tree, tangerine and lemon essential oil. Whipped in with my hand mixer. It smells good and it feels so good on my hands.

HCB, I started reading ingredients on make up etc---scary. I've read them on food for I think forever. I read a library book last year about chemicals in your environment no idea of the name, it started me on this journey on cleaning products so have slowly worked on that, haven't used all the old ones up yet as I hate to waste those $$$ but getting closer. Just switching laundry detergent to all natural and using vinegar in the Downey ball for a rinse and dryer balls made huge difference in my asthma. It has gone on from there. I do use alcohol and some bleach but my use of bleach is less and less. A few drops of an essential oil in a snack size crock pot and my house smells yummy. No poison. Glade air freshener kills birds, bird were and still are used as tells in mines for poisonous gasses. Bird groups for a couple decades have been trying to get warnings on air fresheners. There was a report I saw recently about the dangers of them causing cancer and many respiratory issues in a reputable study but seems to have disappeared, at least I can't find it. As you know I assume everything your life affects your health and therefore your weight and total well being--- not specifically weight related but it is health related. Interesting though: there are studies out there that correlate the chemicals that you put on your body to hormones that control weight as those chemicals are absorbed by your body. Most that I have read say stay away from chemicals, go all natural.

Glen, men's deodorant as well-- aluminum--harmful to your health. Also hair products and I'm seeing more men using moisturizers. Also your after shave.. Chemicals and more chemicals. Not just women.

Funny, my latest thing is finding good drinking water, away from the tap. It isn't just Flint. This is being exposed as a nationwide problem. Why are so many getting cancers and so many health problems at younger ages? Many don't even question what is in their environment. Get wise, and use bottled water for drinking period, unless you can filter your water indefinitely, which is difficult.

Warren, be carful with the bottled water as much is simply tap water bottled and is higher in pollutants and bacteria than your local tap water. I'm currently looking at filters and generally won't drink bottled water.

I have heard that, but tap water is dependent on where is comes from, and like Flint, the quality varies significantly. You can also can choose from many different bottled water companies. I have a relative dying of cancer that is younger, and when my father was diagnosed with cancer, they asked him about carcinogens in his environment, and he told them he had worked with poison gas during the war. The point is to be aware.

I love my essential oils. I totally understand about getting rid of the processed, its a process in and of it self. Good luck!

Exactly Warren, basically do your research. Environment also includes the products you use in your homes and on your body. I know for me getting rid of the synthetic fragrances in my home has made a huge difference in my asthma. Docs have said my asthma was probably caused by living in a cigarette smoke filled home growing up. I have never smoked and am actually highly allergic to the second hand smoke.

SKwhite I am slowly building a collection of the essential oils. My bathroom cabinet contents have changed dramatically over the past year. Definitely a process. Both in learning what works, finding sources for ingredients and in my case using up or tossing products that I previously used.

Yes, I have seen that too. Suspicious things crop up in environments like that. I hate being around smokers, and find it with my band mates that I play music with.

Environment is critical to your well being.

Taking care of yourself and your family I feel is a creative art in this world today. It is not the norm of processed everything. Take time, enjoy the process, learn new options. It is an art toward living healthy. It also is a long term commitment and gets so much easier as time goes on.
