Have been thinking and reading about diet today. Reread the page on the NHS site entitled 'The truth about carbs', which basically states what I've always understood, that sugar and white, processed carbs are bad, but carbs in natural foods like whole grains, veg, fruit, pulses are not harmful.

Then read people's comments on this article, which I haven't read before. The comments were 100% against what the article said. Basically they all said similar things: that all carbs (not including fibre) are harmful, because they cause fluctuations in blood sugar.

People stated various benefits of a low carb diet, including weight loss and reduction in levels of lipids in the blood, even on a low carb/high fat diet, and also said that there was no evidence of any bad effects such as deficiencies or constipation.

Then I looked at my diet stats in FS, and found that my carb intake is a lot higher than I thought. But of course I do eat lots of fruit, grains and sometimes pulses. In fact before this I was thinking of increasing the pulses and reducing the meat content on some days. I didn't realise there's so much sugar in milk either!

Looked at another site that advocates the LCHF diet, and had a read of that, and another think, and then changed my shopping list! I don't think I can go the whole hog with LFHC, as basically I couldn't eat all the fat, cream, oil etc. I did buy actual meat instead of the 'healthy' ready meals I normally buy, and I bought a pack of peanuts in their shells for snacking. I thought the shells would slow me down and stop me pigging out on them. Other than that, I shopped as normal.

I think going forward, I will try to eat a bit less starchy food and more protein foods, and see how that goes. I think it's still important to stay within calorie limits, as that way I'm bound to lose weight. And of course I must keep exercising and try not to sit so much. I do ache today though!

Next thing to look up will be intermittent fasting. I wonder if that might help speed up the weight loss? Probably something to do the day before a weigh-in...

Personally I've found all the carb and what-not hype, is just that hype. I'm sure it works for some people, but not me. While I can't eat whatever I want and not gain a pound, I've found that as long as I eat relatively healthy and expend more calories than I take in I can lose weight. Please be careful if you try the intermittent fasting, I've read lots of articles about people ending up in the hospital due to it. Figure out what works for you and stick to it. :)

I don't believe the carb thing is Hype. It works for me but to each his/her own. Esp when I cannot run and do alot of other things at the power lvl I would like to shedding the extra pounds has helped get it so I can walk 2 miles every day. If I could have gotten moving eaily in the first place perhap I would not think this way but. I do not mind not eating bread and the carbs I do eat are healthy vegetable carbs not white sugar and bleached white bread carbs, ie carbage. They are complex and nutrient dense choices. I feel better even if it does not show that much, I can move, I have less pain which = less meds etc... That to me is the biggest thing.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, both. I think it is a matter of working out what's best for me, so am prepared to experiment a little. I'm not the kind of person to take things to extremes though, and generally healthy, so I don't think I'd be likely to end up in hospital. It sounds like you've both worked out what suits you ☺

Pterath I didn't mean to offend, like I said it works for some people but not me. I did lots of experimenting with different diets and all that stuff before finding what works. Best of luck!

I think it's what works for you, low carb works for some. I tried the low carb, lost, could not sustain it, gained more back several times. It made me sick to my stomach the whole time I was on the low carb plan. I love to cook, I love whole natural foods, make my own whole grain bread I eat little meat. More than about 2-3 oz of meat in a day often gives me stomach aches. I can eat more fish. So I came up with a plan that increased my veggies and fruits, was centered around whole beans and grains, a bit of animal proteins a 1200 calorie limit and tried to keep fat levels around 30-35%. I feel terrific! I'm at my goal weight and have easily maintained it for the past year.

I don't view carbohydrates as being bad, in my opinion it's the simple sugars that are really problemetic. I would never cut out whole grains or fresh fruits/veggies in the name of cutting carbs because they are so valuable through vitamins and minerals. It's the junk, candy, and overly processed foods that will get you. Of course living on a budget you'll often see some processed foods in my diet but I do the best I can with what I've got. Hell, that's all any of us can do. Keep researching, keep trying new things and see what works for you. It's a constant learning process. :)

I'm more used to grains and veggies too, usually only eat a little meat. Have gone off fish lately for some reason, and would rather eat chicken. Totally agree that added sugars and refined grains are the baddies. I read a quote that sugar = fat, because it's always extra calories, and fat is what it will turn into in your body. A good way of thinking of it, I think!
