Rack should be done tomorrow. It won't be used until Friday.

I don't consider myself a slacker and neither should you. I think exercise is like diet. Staying closest to what you like gives you a far greater chance of success. Some like carbs and detest protein. As long as they get enough protein, it's all good. Some shun fats. Others find it satisfying.

Exercise is the same. Some love cardio. More power to them. Some like to lift. Great.

I think the biggest mistake people make when they decide to 'change their lifestyle' is they try to do everything. Further, they try to do everything the right way, aka, according to their chosen expert. It's the age of experts. You want someone to back up any opinion and you can find them. Who cares. It's all meaningless now. It has to be what works for you.

What's even worse than following someone else's plan is doing way to much. Why do we do way more exercise than we would ever consider doing? Why do we decide we need an hour and a half on the treadmill five or six days a week? So we can eat more of course.

The danger is in hitting the goal weight and deciding that you're all done. You quit eating the way you were told, quit exercising the way you were told, and you go back to eating the way you used to and sitting on the couch. Why? Because you never found out what worked for you.

Hang in there people. Keep your head on your shoulders, try everything, throw out what doesn't work and keep what works for you.

This was for ChicaLean, not that she needed the whole rant, but I decided it warranted posting.

Gradually backing down on amount of exercise. It got me where I am now and can't complain. But it's not something I dread doing. I love working out and walking. Now, close to goal, I want to maintain and know that the excessive amount of exercise probably isn't necessary. And it's not my intention of follow suit of those working to cut and build. That's what it's called, right? Anyway, getting to my goal and maintain muscle I've built, especially those in the core is what's important to me.

This was a powerful rant and definitely needed posting, thanks NM. I'm hanging in there and staying focused.

I was just about to comment the same. That's a beauty!

Diddo about keeping the wonderful muscle. I love the wonderful muscle I've made for myself. When I hit my goal in the near future, I will do whatever it takes to not part with it.

Totally agree! I've read some great articles about ladies that have gained superb strength. They eat 3,000-5,000kcal a day and can lift huge weights. I think that's pretty cool! But, I've no intention of doing all of that. I'll be thrilled when I get to deadlift 200 lbs but I'm not striving for to be supergirl. I also follow the thinking that you don't have to feel pain to make gains. I don't normally suffer from doms (except for that first day, I mean three days, of doing ROM squats). As long as I'm progressing every time I lift, I know I'm doing something right. I am enjoying getting stronger and it feels great to be able to carry the week's groceries up to my apartment in one trip by myself.

I can't wait to see the rack NM. I think you will be amazed at the added feel of safety. It really lets you push to the next level. Good post too. I totally agree. I spout out a bunch of advice all the time, maybe I need to make sure to add the disclaimer about "This is what has worked for me". Thanks for the reminder that everyone is different.

Thank you Northern, your comments are so on point! More than losing the weight and exercising is the importance of figuring out what works for you ... your unique formula for health and wellness. That formula is not static and will evolve as your body changes throughout your life. If you don't do the work now as you go through the process, you may find yourself doing it again and again and again. That's why I am in no particular hurry and will allow the time necessary for the weight to come off. In the process I am paying attention. I am learning so much about my body and still have so much more to learn.

Definitely. We're the ones who have to live with our diet changes, so make sure they're something we can live with. That's the only way to make it a lifestyle that we can stick with for life. If the diet is too challenging, the weight will eventually come back on. By trying different foods and exercises, we'll eventually find what works for us. Then there's no need to follow someone else's weight loss plan. Discover YOUR plan!

Absolutely right on every level, Bruce. This is not an all or nothing process, and people like to believe that if they don't get to the gym five days a week then they might as well do nothing.... or that if they accidently eat five grams of carbs too many they can throw in the towel and have six cupcakes. This should not be all or nothing, this should be custom fit to each individual. After all, it's yours to live for the rest of your life you better enjoy it.

I agree w/all of you ~ it doesn't have to be all or nothing. It's merely being aware of what we're doing, accepting the challenges and consequences, and knowing we did what we could to make a difference.

Darlene. There's a young woman in Vernon, BC. She works out and works at the gym I use when I'm down there. I overheard a conversation she was having. She was in clean bulk mode. She doesn't compete but she loves to work out. She looks great and has a lot of strength. I overheard her one day talking with someone else. She said she was at 4800 calories a day. I said I don't mean to eves drop but how tall are you and what do you weight. I got a grin from her. 5' 3" 135 pounds. I have no idea how she eats it. Yeah, That was a lean bulk.

4800 - wow!

Eating that much would make me physically sick right now. I have a hard time with 2500 calories if I am eating clean. Now 4800 might be easier to hit if the diet was pizza, hamburgers, fries and soda! One thing I am quickly learning is that when you work hard, you can eat hard too!

Good post NM! I am thinking, but she doesn't log in 4800 cals a day. And how can she eat that much whole foods. Must be carb packed or calorie packed stuff. Now that would be interesting too.

Dirty perhaps.

Good comments NM, and everyone else. I couldn't begin to eat over 4000 calories. My plan is totally tailored to me and has developed over time and knowing what did and did not work using other's diet plans. No one else could follow what I do because few people have my crazy obsessions for cooking, whole foods, gardens, and cookbooks. In the spring and summer it's hard for me to follow a workout schedule as I have other things happening in my life and lots of outside work that I do. Workouts are my own thing as well, tried what trainer recommended some I use, some I don't as it didn't make me feel good. Love my strength training but they don't always fit my schedule. Tonight exercise is weed eating and if I get done with that mowing the grass: also a bunch of throwing the ball for the dogs. It's 90 out so the temp will be a factor.

Pretty sure that woman was chugging some pretty dirty protein shakes. Likely her fair share of dextrose and cake etc. I know she'd eat a pile of good stuff too. She's quite driven. I'm sure she's not a juicer but she's a very advanced builder.

Next time you see her, should you have the opportunity, ask what she eats. I kind of figured it had to be dirty to eat that many calories/daily. Would love to see a picture of her.
