yfritz's Journal, 15 Dec 22

My father has a pedometer app now. Yesterday he registered >6,000 steps.
Until recently he was ventilator dependent and wheelchair bound due to a near fatal illness, and it is still difficult for him to ambulate. I assisted him to Somei Cemetery in Tokyo yesterday, where the cremains of my mother and brother were interred alongside those of many other ancestral members. It is an old cemetery and the cobbled passages between the plots are quite uneven, but my father managed to navigate the area without falling. He was very pleased with this accomplishment and he started singing most innocently. We do not get along but I do secretly admire his tenacity to overcome obstacles in any given situations.
My father is a survivor of the Great Tokyo Air Raid (1945); during the chaos of the firebombing, he was separated from his mother and fell into the Sumida River where countless bodies were floating. He was a young child then. I don’t know if the memory of the night haunts him or not, rather, it seems that he recollects the inferno as the testament to his own resilience.

Glad to hear you made it safely. Also, good to hear your father is bouncing back from his illness. Living through the air raids had to have impacted him, but sometimes the tempering process leaves its mark. I hope you have a good visit.

This is why you were going to Tokyo? Thank you for this, I understand your mixed feelings now. I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your loved ones and am very moved by your father’s story. It takes great character to respect those who you do not see eye to eye with. Your photo is so rich in feeling, really love it. How Creative you are! ❤️

Wifey that’s very kind of you and I’ll relay your message to my dad. It took me decades to develop a sliver of compassion for him. Still in progress.

Yago he visto filmaciones de la Guerra Civil Española, también conocida como guerra contra los niños. Recuerdo el retrato de tu hermosa madre que compartiste hace varios meses. Tenía una hermosa y conmovedora sonrisa.

🧸🧸🧸 This air raid alone left 100,000 dead and 1 million homeless, which is shocking when we compare that with the combined number of immediate deaths in Hiroshima and Nagasaki which was slightly less (80,000). My dad owns a waterfront condo that faces the Sumida River. We go extra miles to remember the dead, commune with the dead, there are even outrageously funny stories about it, and I love that about Japanese.
