thomas rutherford's Journal, 06 Sep 17

My god it's surprising how time flys. I've not stopped in days. I am pushing on with my food management, I bought in a variety of food stuff to keep it fresh and exciting, the only problem I have had is l am at a loss of how to cook it. My incredibly patient sister has come to my assistance, she has sent me lots of recipes to try with all the cooking times and more importantly the gas setting for the oven. I wish l had paid more attention to my mum when she was teaching me. Still l have not burnt the house down so all's good. I showed you my first attempt at Diet Coke Chicken, now that was a real success. I hope that my future attempts to expand my very limited knowledge of cooking will be just as good. I am still working away at my fitness, weather has not been as kind as l'd hoped although I did do a few good walks around the local hills and streets. When you look at the figures for a 3 hour walk and a 2 hour bike ride the calories will be similar but I know I will get a longer calorie burn from the bike ride because I would have been working more intensely. On High Intensity workouts you continue to burn calories 80% longer after you finish. So if l show a loss of 1000 calories once l complete the exercise l will burn a further 800 free calories in the next 5-6 hours even if l am sat down doing didly squat, now that's a good deal or what. I get my best losses from doing Hiit workouts. This is normally done in the house on my turbo trainer, l have several DVD's from the Spinervals series with inspiring titles like Ride Strong, Lean and Mean,Enter the Red Zone and my favourite Sweating Buckets. I normally use Ride Strong for my warm up before tackling one of the others lol that's definitely a brutal section on the bike and my legs are normally shaking when I get off. A long soak in a redox bath after is a must. Well on a completely different note I am really excited at the moment, l have been saving for a while now and at last I have the funds to buy myself a new guitar. I have been using a £20 acoustic guitar l got from EBay to find out if would be just a phase l am going through or something l want to pursue and learn more. I am able to knock out a few tunes and loving doing something completely different, who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks lol I am picking up my Baby Taylor BT1e tomorrow afternoon yippee. Ok guys that's me up to date with my journal. I am so pleased with how you guys are doing and it's great reading about your progress or lack of lol the important thing is you are willing to do something about it and with constructive advice and encouragement you can reach your goals. Take care and be good and if you can't be good be careful.

If you like pasta, Philadelphia Light makes a lovely quick and easy meal, they have a website with lots of recipes using the different varieties, and I always freeze a couple of portions too. I've set my fitbit back to recognising a walk after 10 mins as I think I underestimated the true benefit of walking!! Enjoy your guitar when you collect it tomorrow.

Hi Gary, with the budget you have there are a lot of great bikes you could buy. There are a number of things I would consider when you are checking out what is on offer. 1. What are you going to use the bike for, is it just for pleasure or for the occasional commute, 2. Carbon or Aluminium ? (If over 120kg go Aluminium) 3. The right gearing for the area you will ride around. Over gearing can ruin a great day out. 4. Set bike up correctly. 5. Include all safety kit and cycling clothes you need for to always have a clean change at hand. As for bikes, look at Giant, Boardman, Trek, Bianchi around the £1500-1600 price range and use the rest to get the gear you need to ride it. You will end up with a bike that will serve you well for many years. If you wittle your choice down to 2-3 , then let me know and l will go through each with you and you will have all the information you need to get one. Lastly go to your local bike shops and talk to each of them. Spend at least an hour in the shop and watch to see how busy they are and how long they spend with a customer. Good luck

Hi ally2000, I took your advice and got some Philly, l am sure I will be able to produce a few more tasty meals to keep me interested in my food. Yeah walking has always been misunderstood, most believe it's only a means to get back and forth between shops and pubs lol but really it's a great form of exercise, is low impact and gentle on our bodies. Our legs can support huge weight and when we run that figure is increased. In my early years l ran a great deal due to being in the Army. Some 22 years later l leave the Army with my knees knackered from running with heavy weights on my back (burgen, weapon, ammunition etc) this was normally in access of 120lbs. Now a days I don't run, l use cycling to get my best results. Very very good on the knees. As for my guitar, I absolutely love it, it's a great sound and I know as l get better l will love it more.
