thomas rutherford's Journal, 17 Aug 17

Hi guys, last night was a hoot lol l cycled down to meet my cycling buddy as arranged, l was loving and enjoying the heat of the evening sun, l got to the meeting place with 10 minutes to spare feeling good and up for a hard ride. Tony arrived at the time we had arranged (he only lives around the corner and he is a bus driver so l would not expect him to be late) we chatted about what we would do on the ride and he suggested that we do a hilly course. Not to sound like a wimp l chirped up great idea let's go, inside l was dreading what was to come. I also knew that the mileage l hoped to do would not happen due to the work rate required to tackle them. Still l'm out on my bike and it's sunny. We set of a modest pace conserving energy for the hills to come. Within 15 minutes we are out in the country side and having to work much harder to maintain pace. After around 12 miles the wind began to pick up, that's a sure sign around this area that the weather is changing. I know we were going to have rain this evening but the forecast had said 11ish and it was only 7ish. The temperature was dropping and it was getting darker. We stopped and accessed the situation and it was evident that the ride would have to be cut short, a great big black rain cloud was heading our way, we were both at least 40 minutes cycling away from our houses so we decided to cut our losses and head home. We back tracked a few miles and found a road which would take us to a point where we could split and go our separate ways. There was rain in the wind just a few spots but rain. I said my goodbyes and shot off. It's amazing how hard you push yourself when the rain is coming up behind you lol l got home with minutes to spare. I am a fair weather rider I don't like riding in the rain besides it takes ages to wipe the bike down and set it up for the next ride and it's down right dangerous around here car drivers don't give a damn about cyclists. Although it was not as long a ride as l hoped for it still was awesome. Another 1000 plus calories burnt, fitness increasing and most importantly my butt doesn't hurt as much lol win win win. I've just fuelled up and will be getting ready to go out for another ride. It's perfect for a 40 miler l have planned a mixed route bypassing the really steep hills (l am such a wimp) l expect to set off in about an hour. I will update my journal later when I get back and shower and settle down for the night. I hope you are all well and in good spirits. Enjoy your day bye for now.
