John10251's Journal, 30 Jan 17

I'm watching this odd new tread. I'm seeing results from strength training that I can feel. I have been working my core more than usual and other larger muscle groups. I had lost some muscle trying to obtain a smaller and flatter waist but I still have some belly fat. I have been trying to eat more protein while not increasing my caloric intake. My waist is still 32" although my body weight seems to be trending towards gaining. It's as if the weight I gained during the holidays is actually fueling muscle growth. I'm starting to focus more on how I look, feel and my how my clothes fit than pounds. I'm finding all this pretty amazing...

I'm the same height with a 30" waist, at least that's what my jeans are labeled. I know that jeans run a bit big. I've never measured myself, just go by pants size. If you wear a 32 pants and still have belly fat, it's not your workout, most likely it's your diet. Tight abs with a six-pack is 20 exercise and 80% diet. I believe that. I've held onto a six for about three years. I don't think more protein is the solution. Are you eating sweets, starches, bad fats, fast foods, processed foods...Review your intake.

@Adamevegod, I read your profile and actually I'm a little shorter than you. Thanks for your suggestions and observations. I never have had very good core strength or a six pack and at my age, posture is also a concern of mine. Exercise and diet has resulted in an overall improvement in my appearance. I hope to keep building on that. I'm not afraid to have a 30" waist but I would be just as happy to maintain this moderate 32" waist. It fits me better than the 38" pants I used to wear. To be honest, I am eating some sweets, starches, bad fats, fast foods and processed foods but they don't dominate my current 1700 calorie intake goal. If they had, I don't feel I would be in Maintenance mode now...

Even moderate amounts of bad food wreak havoc on desired goals. Peanuts are my downfall, even when sticking with a great diet and strong exercise routine, with the exception of too many peanuts, if I overindulge I can see it fairly rapidly in the mirror. BTW, when I really focused on my core my posture increased exponentially. Here is a video from a great site that I use every day. You can find any exercise video imaginable. https://www.fitnessblender.com/videos/six-pack-burn-out-intense-abs-workout . Out side this I do a routine with hanging leg raises twice a week that along side diet I really attribute to great abs and a strong core. 1700 cals sounds too light. I'm about 2600 cals. God's speed.
