JockoT's Journal, 27 Jan 17

Well I am pleased enough with that number for a week’s loss, especially on the back of the previous week.
This past week I ate on three days and fasted on four. On my eating days I ate a maximum of 3454 Kcals and a minimum of 2885 Kcals, which averaged over the three days to 3222 Kcals/day. On each of my fasting days I consumed 85 Kcals/day. This equates to an average, over the seven days, of 1430 Kcals/day. I avoided sugar and refined Carbs, where I could, and upped my Fibre, exceeding the 21 grams/day recommended for a man of my age. I also took an Apple Cider Vinegar tablet, each eating day, with my breakfast. On two of the three eating days I managed to keep my Carbs below 30% of my daily intake.
Today is the second day of a two day fast, and everything is fine. I am not particularly hungry, though my stomach is rumbling occasionally. If that is the only downside to fasting I can certainly live with that. Once again I have taken a Centrum Advance Multivitamin and as I have done on previous fasting days, a sachet of Laxido, just to keep me regular!

Jocko - that's very impressive, not just the weight loss but also your understanding of what you're doing and how it equates to a balanced eating plan AND your ability to explain it to others.

Well done Jocko, it seems you may have found a way that is working again. Maybe you needed to shake things up a bit, which I suppose we will all have to do when we plateau with our weight loss.

Your graph for weight loss is looking really good Jocko. I've had a look at the numbers you've given, and there are 4 fasting days averaging 85 kcals (total of 340 kcals) and 3 days averaging 3222 kcals (total of 9666 kcals). Based on averages, the total for the week is therefore 340 + 9666 (total 10,006). Total for each day is 10,006 divided by 7, which gives 1429.42 kcals. This ties in really well with the kind of calorie level which men like Awaldram seem to be aiming for as the threshold where they lose some weight and would also tie in with me and my friend finding that, as women, we have to keep to around 1300 kcals to maintain weight and go below 1300 kcals to lose weight. It's all in the numbers isn't it? I suppose it's all a matter of how you like to eat, very evenly - having the same every day, or else unevenly, eating little some days, but saving up for days when you can really treat yourself and have some larger meals. Anyway, well done for being near to what Mrs Maths calls the Onzies - you must be really pleased to have lost the weight.

Judy. The benefit of fasting is the body doesn't turn your BMR down, where as eating the lower figure every day does.

I try to do the 16:8 way as I have read longer fasts are not recommended for women.

16:8 (or to be more precise 12:12) worked brilliantly for my wife. From a size 18 down to an 8/10, with no change to what she was eating.

Your wife is my new inspiration Jocko. Though I still have to record/count calories. There is no way I would lose weight eating the way I was before, even if I ate it in a one hour window.

I've had a look and there's quite a good blog on this called "Does Intermittent Fasting Boost Your Metabolism?" It has links to a number of different articles. It looks as if Intermittent Fasting lowers insulin (allowing more fat to be broken down), causes a rise in human growth hormone (a hormone which promotes fat loss) and increases norepinephrine (causing cells to release fatty acids). While long periods without foods have been shown to cause a slowing of metabolism (because your body goes into energy conservation), short-term fasts can boost metabolism. Seems like reviews are saying there's a need for more research into the area, but that IF is comparable to calorie restriction in comparison studies and may be better for preserving muscle mass. What interests me is how appetite is affected by sugar. I found that when I totally eliminated sugar for a time, I just stopped being hungry. Since then I've reduced the amount of added sugar in my diet considerably and cut down chocolate to about one spoonful of drinking chocolate. Reducing, rather than totally eliminating added sugar seems to be what has worked best for me. You sound like you've already read quite a lot on this Jocko, but have a look at the blog and see what you think.
