Lorneylorna's Journal, 06 Aug 16

Had an amazing holiday, walked for miles, but food was an issue. Edinburgh was catering for the masses coming for the festival, so when someone like me comes along with a low carb diet, they weren't really interested. Also, finding a proper supermarket was impossible too, only small express stores with a limited range were found in the city, so couldn't easily buy food to eat and due to the volume of people, stock was low even for them. I have had a gluten intolerance for many years, this was the trigger for me going low carb, but whilst away I had a normal sausage, which would have contained gluten, my body's reaction was immense, I had severe stomach pains, cramping like nobody's business and had 'toilet issues' for 2 days, so I would say my gluten intolerance has developed. I used to have bloating and uncomfortable stomach only. So, I will be ensuring I am 100% gluten free from now on, I hadn't had any gluten for some months, so did not know I would react so badly ... not the best thing to happen on holiday, esp. when sharing a room. Still, on a fast day today to clear my system and hope to lose this gain I have as soon as possible and to mend my tummy after its rude awakening.

Glad to hear you had a good holiday, in spite of tummy problem. That does sound bad. Have you been checked for coeliac disease? With the severity of your symptoms, it could be a possibility, and it would be as well to know about it. Also, if that is the diagnosis, you can get some gluten-free foods on free prescription I believe, which might help you.

I haven't been tested, but to be honest I am not worried about knowing, as you have to eat gluten for 2 weeks before they can test, don't fancy that tbh. The gluten free foods are not very low carb friendly, so I would probably avoid them anyway, but thanks for letting me know about the free prescriptions for the food, I hadn't realised that. I will eat as if celiac, just won't have the label of one, hopefully will ensure I don't have another reaction xx

Sounds strange that you have to eat gluten for the test! I just thought it would be worth finding out because there is gluten in so many things that you wouldn't even realise. My celiac friend relies on an annually-published book to tell her what she can eat. But I guess as long as what you're eating isn't disagreeing with you, then that's fine. Take care xx

My GP said you need to be reacting to gluten in order for the test to show results, I have found a coeliac site that I can join as a gluten intolerant member, so should be able to keep up to date there.

It's a shame you were unable to find low-carb outlets in the Festival melee. Edinburgh does cater for it though, places like Urban Angel (vegan, low carb/ gluten or lactose intolerance) and for a special night out there is 21212,a low carb, zero sugar Michelin starred restaurant. Admittedly, supermarkets tend to be smaller in the centre of Edinburgh than slightly further out. I hope it hasn't put you off visiting again and that you feel better soon.

Hi H2Go, thank you for the info, very useful! I will definitely be returning, but not for a few years, planning on visiting Glasgow in a couple of years, so Edinburgh will be sometime after that. We will definitely check out the Urben Angel, my friend is veggie, so will enjoy that too.

Glad you found a helpful website. Most restaurants are also pretty good at advising on content of sauces etc. nowadays.
