northernmusician's Journal, 26 May 16

Very pleased with this weigh in. Yesterday was a 2800 calorie day with 200 carbs. Calipers are showing me at 10.4 bf (still an estimation) but I'm starting to believe it as the abs are definitely defining into 6 now. I'm beginning to believe it. Of course the coveted BMI shows me still as 'overweight'. BMI is likely how most people figure out what their weight 'should' be, or rather, how their doctor figures how what their weight 'should' be. Nope. BMI is a joke, just like the food pyramid... and not even Phil's food pyramid.

Have a great day all. I plan to make this a 6 pack summer. Then I plan to hang onto it. No more bulking for this guy..

Fabulous Bruce! And I agree...how can I let a number that a stranger came up with us mess with my head so much.

I agree, Laura. Lean and strong beats arbitrary every day of the week. Have a great day.

Curious - do you think the BMI gives too high or too low estimates? Or is it too vague? In the olden days the weight charts did not list ranges but did have separate charts for men and women. And the women's heights were always specified "in 2-inch heels." (why? why? why?)

It's a simple division of height to weight. That being said, there are people who are naturally very lean and tall. They can carry a fair amount of fat and they are still normal. Bodybuilders, people who are carrying a lot more muscle than the average person, even natural bodybuilders, will almost always be overweight. The steroid using Mr. Universe types are absolutely in the obese range while in the 7% to 4% body fat range.

Calipers over BMI for sure. Europeans love using the BMI charts. I hate those charts.

They're a scam, Engeland. I believe they were developed by insurance companies to boost rates.

I think so too.....scam. When I was in the military moons ago they used a measuring tape and/or skin calipers IF someone tipped the scales. And even the numbers on a scale don't paint the entire picture.

BMI I a joke and any Dr or insurance company that stands by it needs to be laughed at. Using it as a single measuring stick is irresponsible.

Great news Bruce!! By the way, I'm a 27 on the BMI scale (204 lbs at 6' 1")...never really fit on that scale properly since I got through puberty...I'm Ok with that though...I have a friend who has the other problem, a little shorter, much lighter and very wiry...on the BMI scale he is TOO thin, yet he has an amazing power to weight ratio...one armed chin ups and lots of one armed push ups at 59 years of age!

NM, have you had any time to rock climb?

Thanks everyone. Things are kind of balled up, Sugar. We're planning on going out to do some rock climbing at Owen hat. He's on holiday. I'm working 6 days a week at the moment. Kind of tough to make it happen. We will though.
