Wrote a rant, deleted it, shortened it (or tried). This idea pervades "pop culture dieting" to this day and man, somehow it really pisses me off. Keys' terrible, misleading science built on a bucket of "selectively-purposed vs ignored" data has hung around even long after science has moved on and proven otherwise - to the clear benefit of the vegetable oil industry that sprung up in the decades after he hit the cover of TIME. Now - avoiding transfats? Absolutely good plan. But avoiding ALL fats? Nonsense. That's just laying out out there - nutritionally it's absolute nonsense to subject fat (or any macronutrient) to the unfair assessment that all fat is equal, when it's simply not the case. Yes, if you strictly speak to CICO, strictly to energy consumed/expended and losing weight, then fat "a" and fat "b" may be equal calorically, and it's easy to OVEReat them as a result of being calorically dense! However, that aside, we still have the fact that the human body benefits from essential fatty acids, and that the right fats, or wrong ones, can act as a benefit or detriment to human health. Fat is the most hormone/insulin neutral of all the macronutrients, and is helpful to the body for absorbtion of certain micro-nutrients (consider the fat-soluble vitamins - D, K, etc.), and is deeply satiating. Fat is necessary for the optimal health of your skin, your eyes (that's just the start). Good sources of dietary fat are my firm and forever allies when it comes to health and weight loss! Avocado, oily fish, eggs, butter - all delightful and nutrient-dense foods. Ok - not so short after all, but honestly I hope one person reads this and thinks "you know, maybe I shouldn't avoid fat, maybe I should read up on it more first". If one person does, it was worth it.

Do know that when I added the good ones, butter, avocado, coconut oil, and nuts, I lost and it fills me up. It takes time and energy to learn to coordinate calories if that's your issue. But it can be done.

100% agree with the post above this one.

So true. One thing people also don't know is that you don't use the calcium you eat in the absence of fat, I know for certain one instance of anecdotal evidence of severe osteoporosis because the person believes all fat is bad and has cut it out for 30 years or more. I read an article on LiveStrong where a "nutritionist" actually said that skim milk has enough fat in it to utilize the calcium in it.

That absolutely makes sense, because for the body to fully utilize calcium, it needs adequate D and K!

Your brain is made of fat, your entire CNS (central nervous system) utilizes fat to function, and your body needs fat to absorb any and all nutrients that you take in through food. Omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids are only obtained through consumption of fat (even if you supplement them, its simply a tablet filled with fat!) People just don't realize all of this. If they read about someone losing a ton of weight by doing ANYTHING people flock like bugs to a light. Desperation to lose weight is a dangerous game. so many people have a "It works so I'm going to do it" mentality. I have a friend who lost 150 lbs by eating nothing but a bowl of cereal every morning and fasting the rest of the day and taking fat burners from GNC. He got all the way down to 135 lbs before he bounced right back to his orginal weight a little over a year later. SOMEHOW he didn't end up with any chronic conditions from the ordeal, but who knows how his health will be in the future. He got the whole idea to do this from a celebrity on the internet.

Anyone who cuts out fat entirely is just begging for a trip to the emergency room! Watching your amounts is important though.

It depends on a person's chosen nutrition plan - I do ketogenic which is high healthy fats. As Chadlius said, the body needs fats to run efficiently.

I got presented with the "Joe Rogan: Be The Hero of Your Own Movie" Ad, one of the few Youtube Ads that I'll watch all the way through. Funny fails, lol.
