I'm losing more weight again. I'm obsessing less about and relaxing a little more with my diet but I am still remaining in my carb and calorie zone. I am not cheating or eating junk though. Just trying more healthy foods in small amounts. I'm still trying to move more and am doing that consistently. My goal is about health so I can eat all healthy foods that don't trigger me if I eat them in proper portions or even less than a portion. I am less afraid of being hungry. I am trying to control my blood sugar without a glucose meter which is not easy. Maybe my doctor will be more willing to help me get one once he sees that I am serious about weight loss as it is listed as the number one thing to help my blood sugar. I have lost almost 16.5% of my body weight since mid June. In order to help my A1c I was supposed to lose around 30 pounds or 7-10% of my body weight according to everything I have read about people who have successfully lowered their A1c. So I have exceeded that and I am not done. I intend to get out of the obese range. When that occurs I will set new goals. As my main goal is health it is easy to find new ways to improve my life. I found it hard to lose weight in order to look better. I found it even hard to lose weight in order to feel better. I don't find it hard to lose weight to save my eyesight, kidneys, legs, life. I'm into this, big time.

I know exactly as you discovered. Never could lose the weight just for me. But when after years of a steadily increasing A1c, pounds adding up, diabetes medication going more and more...it took 1 doctor to tell me that I MUST go on insulin. I watched this disease literally kill my mother. Same pattern of progression. I instinctively knew insulin was a death sentence. I went strict keto immediately. Lost 70# 7 months! A1c dropped 10.0 to 5.8. Just 3 months in, I was off ALL diabetes meds! And so many other health improvements followed. I lived then and live now with this rule for me: eat carbs & die; eat keto and live! Congratulations for taking back control of your life from big pharma!

Your message was very encouraging to me. I do not want to go on diabetic meds.

This is not the fault of “BIG PHARM”. It is the fault of all of us who eat way more of the types of things we shouldn’t and rely on “BIG PHARM” to provide the pill or shot that allows us to not assume responsibility for our choices. Before “BIG PHARM”, you just died.

It is my fault and I am definitely wanting to put off death as long as possible. LOL.

If your doctor is not willing to help you lose weight and control your blood sugar, maybe you should find a new doctor. Insurance should cover a meter and possibly strips to check your blood sugar. Mine does. Glad you are experimenting with healthy foods. So am I. Hope this helps. Best wishes to you.

Now you die because Big Pharm raises the price 100s of times on a medicine that is decades old. My Granddaughter is a type 1 diabetic. The cost of her survival is affordable for the independently wealthy.

My wife (bless her heart) is not supportive of my goals. She says I'm fine the way I am; so I don't have the options of choosing less or more carbs, fat or protein. I keep my mouth shut and eat what's put in front of me; what a wimp :}

allenpendlebury— how about if you tell your wife to take the night off from cooking and YOU COME UP WITH A MENU, YOU DO THE SHOPPING, YOU BRING THE FOOD HOME, YOU PREP THE FOOD, COOK THE FOOD AND PUT IT ON THE TABLE IN FRONT OF HER. Shared responsibility for all the duties that surround eating. Maybe she will like the lower carb, higher protein, moderate fat meal that you make for her, and will be willing to try some of the menus you come up with. Worth a try— maybe?

Regarding blood sugar monitors— first of all call your insurance company and find out what their criteria is for covering a meter and the paraphernalia that goes along with it. If you meet that criteria talk to the doctor and tell him you spoke to the insurance people and you qualify. Go from there. In the case that you do not qualify, you can always pay for it yourself. The machine itself is not expensive but the test strips and other stuff adds up. It is not the meter that cures the diabetic or makes them successful, it is the changes they are willing to make in their personal habits. It sounds like you are opting for the longest, healthiest life that is within your control. Good for you. Just keep going and then you won’t even need the meter. Hang in there. You are on the right track

Slyone22 it’s not just the cost of insulin that is a factor here, but the many different kinds of insulin that is available today and the multiple different delivery systems now available. Really complicated, but there is Definitely a bit of greed involved. . The cost of insulin products should be a HUGE, HUGE , HUGE motivator to deal with any reversible issues people can control so that they never have to deal with this .

I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments. I am on medicare and they are supposed to pay for a meter and supplies but my doctor doesn't seem to think it's all that necessary for me. I'm not on any meds yet.
