-MorticiaAddams's Journal, 27 Jan 22

I spent a long time in the Oncology Center yesterday out of town with hubby and ended up having to eat dinner at a drive-thru as I could not put off eating any longer. I avoid fast food like the plague/covid. We have tried scads of solutions to this problem but they have never worked. I am on a very strict diet now and it doesn't have any room for fast food nor taking food you can eat on the run. Hubby loves this particular fast food place, mostly I feel because he likes to get their ice cream, which he isn't actually supposed to have either. Plus he also considers this place to offer the best deals in fast food. Cheapness plus ice cream wins almost every time with my hubby. We aren't rich. He has terminal cancer. What can I say. Life isn't all about me. I love him. I don't eat ice cream nor drink sugary caffeinated soft drinks and it doesn't matter much as fast food is dog food only less nutritious with added salt, fat, sugar. I take my own water, throw away buns, leave off mayo, ketchup, omit tomatoes, onions, fries, get grilled chicken, look for healthy non-existant salads and healthy salad dressings, and none of it works as there is no healthy food at fast food places. In my opinion as a retired critical care nurse, ALL selections at fast food places are horrible for diabetics and everyone who breathes. So even though I ate NO breakfast and my usual lower calorie, lower carb brunch, I ended up 100-200 calories and 30-45 carbs (10%) over my usual daily intake. I was under my daily fiber intake, under my daily protein intake. The worst is being over my sodium intake by 1300 mg!!!!! Yes, I am very low calorie, lower carb, lower sodium, high protein, high fiber by design - my doctor's. And I was left hungry the rest of the day and had no room left to eat anything else including my healthy snack. I'm not looking for sympathy, empathy, seeking advice, or making excuses. It is what it is. I am back on plan but am not happy about the 3.5 pounds I gained - mostly salt - but my body doesn't tolerate inflammation well and my fingers are stiff and swollen today. Who knows how long it will take me to rid myself of the salt/fat/sugar bolus. They hide all of these diet wreckers in everything. Why can't fast food places actually offer a few items on the menu that meet ALL the requirements of healthy food? Sorry about writing a book but I feel we all need to start demanding better food.

Remember, it was one day, one meal. Today is a new day. I too stay away from fast food restaurants as much as I can. I eat mostly non processed, high protein, low carb, low fat foods so my stomach can no longer take all the processed foods... I'm sorry to hear about your husband. Stress will also play a factor in what you eat.

I used to travel a lot for my old job, and would stop in a grocery store for a meal if there weren’t any decent restaurants in the area (I avoid fast food places always). A market will always have prepared salads and lo-cal dressings, plus you can buy single pieces of fruit. And no one says you must clear your plate — just throw away half. As for your husband, if he has terminal cancer, he is probably past the point of giving a f*ck about what he eats, since it’s not like it will make a difference at this point.

I admire your focus and understand your frustration. No unwanted sympathy or advice, per your request. If it's two things I love; it's 1) being cheap and 2) ice cream! lolololololol 😂. Just sending positive energy your way bcuz it's OK to lose the day... as long as we remember we can STILL win the week...The month...And the year! You got this! 💪

I'm again weening off the fast food. I think there's a price to pay eating out anywhere. Number one, it allows the variable of not knowing the cleanliness and health of whoever is preparing your meal. Number two, They never get anything right. This is the disappointment I don't miss. Three, nothing is healthy in most of these settings, even the restaurant setting, so I try to stay away from it as much as possible. We too got food when we were on the road yesterday, and I just ate it. It was pretty good, but my mind and body always wonder who is preparing my food. Sounds like your husband likes Wendy's to me... lol.

Sorry you have to go through this. My husband has Melanoma that has spread to his lymph. So surprised he's had it for 6 months since it is such an aggressive cancer, and there is no chemo for it. He won't give up sugary desserts or eat smart. He had pie and ice cream for dinner last night because he didn't like the Ahi tuna steak with Teriaki sauce I cooked for him. He did eat his salad but we know sugar feeds cancer.

By the way, our married daughter has had stage 4 cancer for 5 years. But she is quite strict in what she eats. It does not influence him.

It's the hidden MSG that gets me - it gives me migraines. Needless to say, I avoid drive throughs too. Years ago I took a road trip and figured I could eat egg and sausage breakfast sandwiches without the buns and ended up with a migraine every day - big mistake! I'm sorry to hear about your husband's cancer, and the treacherous food landscape you must navigate.

I try to avoid MSG too. And a host of other ridiculous additives.
