How I dropped 4 pounds in one day

I did a little experiment yesterday. I am glad it didn't kill me, but I learned a lot.

Yesterday I drank only water during the day. I am reading the Dr. Fung book "The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss" - https://amzn.to/2sAbluO and that has got me to cut way back on Splenda® because it still causes Insulin production and that is what causes fat.

I walked during my lunch hour and felt fine all day. After I drove home in one hour traffic I felt REALLY tired. I was so tired I wanted to go take a nap. I did a blood test with my glucometer and the reading was 59! (normal fasting levels are 70-90). I believe that my body finally burned through all its ready to use glycogen stores and was crashing my metabolism to reach Homeostasis (https://bit.ly/2JkoByp).

When it comes to feeling tired while fasting I always recommend vigorous exercise. However, I have never been this tired. I know I needed to lift weights or run. I was scared I would kill myself lifting weights while this tired so I decided to run. I weighed myself before the run and I was 187 (lost a pound since I weighed that morning!).

I only told myself I would put on my running clothes and shoes. This took 1/2 hours I was that tired! I started to slowly jog and I could barely move. I told myself I would hit the first mile and turn back if I truly couldn't do it. Along the way I thought to myself that I still have 20+ pounds of fat. My body could burn it using the process of Gluconeogenesis (https://bit.ly/2sAOcIO) This literally means "New Glucose", but this is a harder process for the body.

Anyway during the first mile I found some energy, not a lot, but enough to complete the 5 mile, 1 hour run. When I got back home I took a reading and I was 65. Still low, but it showed my body will find glucose when it needs to.

I weighed and I was down to 185. This was surprising because I did not think I still had water weight to lose. While my run burned a lot of calories, there is no way I could have burned 2 pounds of fat!

Anyway, I drank a cup of Miso soup and went to bed. When I woke up my glucometer reading was 84 (totally normal) and my weight dropped another pound to 184.

@um_autaviah - Thanks for the support! I expect I will "give some of it back" because I am back to eating this weekend I don't restart fasting until Monday, but, as long as I stay below 190lbs I will be happy :) I am thinking of doing an 11 day fast this time...

Great job on your fast and thank you so much for sharing this! I've fasted with juice many time, but can't get myself to stick to water. After reading my post, I will try again!

That's great

Wow! Nice detailing for the gluconeogenesis. It really makes it easy to understand - thanks!

The water weight thing kills me, and that's what keto-bashers always say, "you JUST lost water weight!!11!" The amount of water in the human body ranges from 50-75%. That's a lot of water, and fat tissue does not have as much water as lean tissue, so if you're losing "a lot" of water weight and that weight is coming from fat cells, if you're losing a lot of it, that tells you that you're on to something.

@Nonieb - I usually start with juice for a few days then water for the remaining days. I 'ease into it'

@Phil - Good point. Thanks for that.

You're welcome. It takes more than a surface scratch of scientific understanding to really grasp what sort of metabloic shenanigans are going on, and I know you get it, Adef. Here's what I postulated to a number of calorie crusaders recently, none of which could respond, the thread it was posted it got deleted as a matter of fact because it was so damning to the CICO point-of-view... "Here's where keto-bashers mess up; 1. You admit keto is real and even cite studies where keto is compared to other diet methods. 2. The studies you cite begin with a premise so flawed that all anyone has to do is report greater weight-loss on a ketogenic diet than any other diet and the metabolic ward studies (or any other sort of study) unravels. and 3. ketogenic diets are as different and unique as the people that are on them. Dr. Atkins wrote that everyone will do his diet differently. Atkins IS a ketogenic diet, one of the first that got popular and, if you're going by the old books, Diet Revolution or New Diet Revolution, still two of the most solid programs you can find. And because there are as many different keto diets as there are keto dieters, you can't generalize the results of an apples-to-oranges study to the rest of the population." Bro-Science just can't stand up to real, actual science.

And I'll just add this for the Calorie Insisters, if you LIKE the 1st Law of Thermodynamics, and it's working well for you, then KEEP the 1st Law of Thermodynamics. I'm tired of the psychotic diet arguments. On a metabolic level there's more going on than mere calorie accountancy.

Well said. I'm new to Keto (since January) but I quickly learned I had to to my homework for myself, although I'm not very good at it. I've found a few mentors who pretty much say the same as you: Eating plans are totally individual and if you are not willing to put in the work (both physically and mentally) your results will not be as good as they could be. Well done, Phil!

Thanks, Carein, Diet Doctor is is a good source of information. I combined what I already knew from Atkins Diet Revolution & Atkins New Diet Revolution with the information from Diet Doctor and put together an incredibly successful individual program. I'm not knocking anyone that can, "eat whatever they want" and lose weight or maintain their weight, I'm just saying that while I was losing I found an extremely strict regimen was best suited for my particular needs. Maintenance is still challenging because it still requires a lot of diligence.

Great job in simplifying the biochemistry involved in gluconeogenesis.

Amazing post. Thanks a lot, all your research and links are super useful. Great weigh lose. I'm interested.on the book now. Cheers

It's great you had the ability to do all of that while also being as tired as you've ever felt. No telling what you can do when you're full of energy! If i could run that much at my size I'd sweat out about 30 pounds i bet lol. Well actually i would pass out from the exertion.

Wow! I can’t believe you did a 5 mike run so tired!! I can barely jog 2 full of energy! Lol Way to go!

I love that you’ve laid it all out clearly to follow. That’s really helped my understanding. Well done on pushing through too 👍🏻

@Phil - The ONLY reason I am not just doing Keto is I don't follow the guidelines. I have no doubt it works because it is working for so many people (my sister just lost 40 pounds on Keto). Fasting allows me to get my insulin down so I get the same benefits that I would get if I just did Keto correctly :)
