JockoT's Journal, 04 Mar 17

After a day pigging out, yesterday, I am once again onto a fasting day. My wife found “Frisps”, while out shopping on Friday. I haven’t seen them, far less eaten them, for years. Yesterday I had 3 bags!!!
Today I am feeling relatively pain free. I have been able to avoid pain killers so far, so let’s see how the day progresses. Poor Madge is bussing it over to visit her Mum again, so the sooner I am back driving again, the better. It is wet and miserable as well. The bus journey is bad enough, but it requires a change of bus in Edinburgh and a mile walk, each way, each end, to add to her misery.

I'm sure Madge will be fine. No point in you rushing into driving again. You need to be able to do an emergency stop without the risk of undoing the surgery before you can drive again.

Frisps.. never heard of them. Do tell us more? Hopefully it's a nice day so your wife can enjoy the walk.. I'm sure she won't mind too much.

Frisps are a potato snack manufactured by KP. Amazon.com (US) sells them. Unfortunately, regarding the weather, is is cold, miserable and wet. Madge texted me to say she was frozen standing waiting for the second bus. She's at her Mum's now though.

Oh .. I feel for Madge. It's the waiting around for a bus which is the worst part . 🚌🚐 Looks like you are healing well now

Joko, I have to tell you that you have a knack of confusing the hell out of me with you weight loss and your methods. One minute you tell us you are fasting and if I read it correctly you may fast for more than one day. The next thing I read is that you have “pigged out”. I am doing my level best to understand why you fast then pig out so much. On looking at you weight graph I have to say to me, it is just a mess of ups and down showing no meaningful loss. Joko, am I missing a point here or am I misunderstanding that which you are attempting to achieve. I am doing my best to lose weight to get back to 99 kg which is the weight I was prior to having lung cancer then my right lung, the left lobe of my thyroid along with my gaul bladder, my right kidney removed then part of my aorta was replaced with a synthetic one and all in the space of two years. I am well on the road to recovery now BUT I went stupid with my food, ultimate comfort eating I suppose but even with my simple dietary input my weight is falling off with no fasting at all. I am unable to understand that which you are doing can you explain please.

IWW: I got fed up with dieting and found that I had reached a point where my metabolism had slowed down so much that it was impossible to eat any less and still perform normally. However, by fasting entirely your metabolism does not slow down. By fasting one or more days then eating on others I consume less calories over a week than I did while dieting but without the resulting reduction in metabolism. Also, by fasting, I am reducing my Insulin Resistance (see "The Obesity Code") with the benefits that that brings with it. Due to my surgery I have not recently been following a fasting or dieting regime but that resumed last Tuesday, and since then I have fasted alternate days. I am fasting alternate days because I am confined to the house but once I am out and about again I will resume the fasting pattern that sees me eating normally every Saturday (our visit the family day). That requires two eating days or two fasting days "on the trot". I elect for two fasting days.

Joko, Thank you for responding to me. I do understand the “theory” behind your activity and I understand the theory about metabolism slow down. There is also a theory about the body going into the so called “starvation Mode” and this has several effects including an effect of metabolism. Fatigue. People who go into starvation mode often feel fatigue. ... Headaches or migraines. The main cause is not eating enough. ... Obsession with food. A reduction of the intake food when your body is in a starvation mode leads to a reduced metabolism. ... Depression. ... Binge eating. (remember your own comment about "piging out") I have now consulted my doctor regarding this activity and as a result received a rather stern warning about it. The internet is full of information about fasting both for and against and the diabetes clinic have a different view to you. One of the warnings is …………….. “If you want to lose your weight, starvation is not a good idea. Starvation diets are often ineffective, because you can gain your weight back. Instead, learn how to eat correctly and consult with your physician.” Your weight graph is not reflecting a weight loss it has more ups and downs than the Welsh mountains. As far as any surgery is concerned I think I may well have the monopoly on that and the effect it has on the body. Anyway, it is obvious that we will never agree about fasting as looking at the results of yourself and Minitata I see no evidence of fasting making us lose weight. Please don’t take this as a criticism that is not my intention it is only that I am unable to agree with your methods which I believe is supported by your graph.

JockoT I'm glad to hear that you are on the mend and able to resume your good progress. Madge is a dedicated daughter to make that trip in the cold rain to see her mum!
