JockoT's Journal, 23 Nov 16

I am having terrible problems controlling my eating at the moment. I start the day fine, with my breakfast weighed and counted and my packed lunch (usually Macadamia Nuts) the same, but when I come home in the evening all I want to do is eat. And I do! I just cannot help myself. I know it is stupid, and totally under my control, but that makes no difference.
It is another shiny bright sub zero day here. I am not working today. Instead of driving I'll be driving! Makes a nice change!! My wife has a dental appointment in Edinburgh so I will drive her across. I hate driving in the city centre but at least we won't be there in rush hour.
My work gave me a lovely, thick, warm beanie hat yesterday, with the company logo on the front. What a difference that made to keeping me warm. Especially with my 2 and a 1 haircut. It is amazing just how cold the van can get between trips. Fine when you are driving, but chills quickly when it is parked up. And woe betide you if you leave the engine running while parked.

Is your intake during the day too low? Sometimes it is not the fat that keeps you feeling full but volumn helps too. How about some hot broth especially on these cold days. Enjoy Edinburgh, I know I do whenever I am uo (but I don't need to drive). Are the christmas lights on yet? They were stunning last year. :)

I can absolutely relate to that. Have you tried protein powder? I was sceptical, but a protein shake is only about 100 calories and the hit of 15g of protein will stop any physical hunger pangs. If you don't fancy protein shakes, maybe try a glass of skimmed milk. Otherwise the old favourite - a pint of water and something to take our mind off food. Most of the time food cravings are in our heads. It's a tough thing to overcome. Keep warm though Jocko, it must be getting really chilli up there this time of year.

I think schmetterling is onto something with the broth. I like to keep bone broth around all the time and have none at the moment so will start up a pot this morning! I suggest watching Butter Bob on Youtube. He has great insight for managing hunger while losing weight. For me, fasting works best right now. I think if I kept bone broth around, I could go a couple weeks without food. I know how you feel, though. I really do. Sending love.

You must be more active when you're working, so I'm sure you do need some extra. Just eat foods on your plan, and stop when common sense tells you that you should have had enough, then wait a bit to see if the hunger goes away. Warms drinks and distracting yourself will help. But if you're still genuinely hungry an hour later, then eat some more. It's only a real problem if weight keeps going up and up over a period of time. Going up and down a little is fine. I would say you've been doing a great job of maintaining over the last few months 😀

I have protein shakes some days if I feel hungry, it does help me. It does sound like you are not eating enough throughout the day. You are still doing better now Jocko.

The beanie sounds wonderful! I agree with the others about broth and protein shakes. If you choose to eat a lot when you get home, at least make good choices. Celery sticks with peanut butter give a satisfying crunch. Or try chewing gum...keeps the mouth busy. ;) Hang in there, buddy. You've come a long way.

I'm glad you have a nice hat now to keep you warm 🙂

I'm a great soup lover so I'd go along with the idea of a thin broth. I even have a tsp of marmite in hot water sometimes to give me the warmth and flavour hit without contributing much in the way of calories. Or if you're a coffee drinker maybe a small flask of black coffee and a small jar of cream to enjoy during the day.. Believe it or not, olives and pickled gherkins are a go-to snack when I get in too - not much in the way of calories but plenty of flavour. Take care

Oh gee! Just love to be in Edinburgh right now. Hubby and I have the travel brochure so hopefully we can get up there asap. You sound more like your feeling like your better self now Jocko, so you have a better appetite, which included the cravings grrrrrrrr. What really works for me is too keep busy...but my problem is that I like to be lazy. Take care, and keep warm

Had my Edinburgh trip. It was cold and clear. We didn't go in as far as Princes Street so I have no idea about Christmas lights. On the way home the new bridge looked fantastic, with the evening sky behind it. Dark here now by 4pm. Not eating enough bulk is a possibility. 80g of Macadamias may be 600 Calories, but it is little more than a good handful. I cannot have something hot when out on the van. I have to eat at the depot and me and thermos flasks are an anathema. I do like to have a hot drink, at home, now and again using a couple of OXO beef cubes.

I have Sara Lee 45 calorie bread here that I've been toasting in the evening. I makes me eat it slower. A soft piece of bread I can hog down in two bites, but not toast. Broth in the evening can also help. Stay warm, Donna

By you and Thermos being anathema, do you mean the glass vacuum ones? There's some pretty good small ones on the market that are all stainless steel (bar the seals). The OH uses his every day when out delivering as a swift swig of warm coffee after a stop helps keep him warm in the rain and wind. Amazon has one at £6.50 for 500ml plus various others. OR, do you mean you're not allowed? In which case, I sympathise with you for working with an unreasonable company. I have to confess, I couldn't survive on 80g nuts for my daily lunch, I need volume in what I eat which is why I eat veggie soups so much. They also keep my fibre up and hydrated too (yes, I know we have disagreements over fibre - let's just leave it at the fact it works for me). Take care, Jocko!

Company is great. It is just that I keep breaking flasks. I'll have a look at the stainless steel ones.

They are a godsend, Jocko. Many a soup I've had on a break between diving at the Isle of May, thanks to those stainless steel flasks. Other places too. As I said, the OH loves his 500-750ml one for quick, warm nips of coffee.

...they still sell Glass thermos???? I have got one lurking in the back of my cupboard, nasty thing. Satinless steel al the way....when I am out beating, I couldn't be without it.

i noticed with the colder temps setting in..for me i started eating 2 salads per day instead of one..an that has curbed my being hungry later in the day...

I'm afraid the only time I would eat a salad is after I'd eaten my fellow survivors! Cannot stand salad. But thanks for the comment.

I pack two 16 oz. stainless steel thermoses with coffee and each has two tablespoons of heavy cream. The combination of the warm liquid liquid and the cream stops the hunger til I get home for dinner. I also pack a quart of tea. So, it's gallon of liquid while I'm out working. Keeps me semi-fasted, the I eat in the early evening. But I'm with you on having to watch that I don't toss down too much during that eating window. Good luck with it, Jocko, and stay warm. Below zero means something much colder on this side of the pond!
