Now staying with a friend who is a great cook, and makes lovely desserts, and I had two helpings of her lovely trifle last night. We're eating out tonight, so I will try to choose sensibly. We're here till Saturday morning, then going to other friends for a birthday barbecue. At least here there is WiFi, so I can attempt to record what I eat, which might help me get back in control. I must say I find it worrying that after all this time, I can still go off the rails so easily!

I love trifle. My ex made the best Scotch Trifle ever. I miss it. Here is a recipe I found online. Pretty much as she made it. Not at all Low Cal. Ingredients: 6 sponge cakes Half pound raspberry or strawberry jam 2oz ratafia biscuits Rind from a lemon, finely grated Vanilla essence/extract Quarter pint double (whipping) cream Flaked browned almonds, glac cherries, angelica Quarter pint medium sweet sherry 2 tablespoons Drambuie Ingredients for Custard: 4 egg yolks 2 egg whites 1 pint milk 1oz caster (granulated) sugar Method: The custard is made by putting the milk and sugar into a saucepan and bringing to the boil. Mix egg yolks and whites and pour the hot milk over them, stirring well. Return to the saucepan and stir over a gentle heat with a wooden spoon. When the custard runs in ribbons down the back of the spoon, strain into a basin and cover with dampened greaseproof paper to stop a skin forming. Split the sponges, mix with jam and put in a glass dish. Crush the ratafia biscuits and scatter on top with the lemon rind. Mix the sherry and Drambuie and pour over the sponges. Leave to soak. Pour the custard evenly over the sponge etc. Whip the cream until stiff and sweeten a little, if preferred. Spread over the trifle. Sprinkle with flaked almonds, small ratafia biscuits, sliced angelica. If you have any "hundreds and thousands" confection, sprinkle that on too, just before the trifle is served..

I'm not big into normal trifle but the recipe Jocko posted has me drooling! Now that's what I call a trifle :)

Heidi, I too find it fairly easy to go off the rails at times, I think when you are with friends, you don't want to say no to everything they offer. I am starting to harden up, but it is really difficult at times. I try to get the mind set that if I was vegetarian (shudder!) then they would not expect me to eat meat to fit in, so as a low carber, they should not expect me to eat very high carb items. I also now pre warn anyone that I am hard to feed and leave it up to them whether they can be bothered or not.

Lorna, I was vegetarian for years, only took to eating meat again to help with weight loss. I eat low-fat, most of the time, and restrict carbs somewhat too. I did stick to my rules today, she cooked us some very nice steak for dinner, and I said no to potatoes, wine and trifle. So that proves it can be done. Going to a birthday barbecue tomorrow. I hope the food isn't too tempting! Then home on Sunday, hooray 😀 Had a nice trip, though!

Always nice to get away and try something different. It is however a fallacy that lean meats are better for you. Most of the taste comes from the fat and it has been found that smaller portions of well marbled meats is not as unhealthy as some state and in fact is far better for you than a lot of the lean meats people buy. I find store bought potatoes are quite bland and the only time I eat them is when I grow them myself or get them loose, from a farm shop. Same with a lot of the mass produced food everyone buys these day,

Sounds like you are doing okay with things; keep up the good work.
