Debbie Cousins's Journal, 16 Mar 23

Yikes. No BM for four days. Maybe that’s why I’m up so much. Maybe it was the muffins I ate.

Been very stressful lately! Seven-year-old grandson has severe constipation and encopresis. He had to be taken out of school yesterday, today and 2m0 to take an adult dose of MiraLAX 3 times a day, plus increase fruits, vegetables and water. My daughter has severe hives, so I’ve been taking him for the morning and afternoon regimen. We’ve made some progress. He’s no longer anxious about pooping, though he hasn’t GONE yet. It’s a full-time job trying to get him to eat anything close to 20g of Fiber. He’s a very picky eater. Water is also a challenge and it doesn’t help anything that I’ve been waking up for the day about midnight!

I understand the water being a challenge, I tend to be a procrastinator when it comes to water intake, so then I'm rushing at the end of the day to finish my daily amount of 144oz. So then I end up being awake half the night having to pee. Lol you would think I would have learned my lesson by now but nope... as I sit here writing this I still haven't even really started on my water intake for the day. Not sure if I am hard headed or just enjoy the lack of sleep due to natures call. LOL

Diet fizzy is absolutely fine, and the perk of the more expensive brands is they bring on the runs. eg for me, diet fanta, and schweppes diet dry ginger ale will start everything going. my latest keto cakes will start stuff up too. I think it's xylitol? Going really low carb really reduces the amount of food waste you end up having. I was on a milk fast a little while ago, did little sheep pellet poops every day or two... on carnivore I had almost no poop. It's okay so long as it isn't building up, or getting stuck. I don't know if you have dogs? when you take them off grain feeds and onto grain free their pooping goes down markedly. It's not constipation, it's just less bulky. On a high fat diet I don't have any dangers of constipation, I think the oil makes it all slip through. :D Sorry to discuss something so disgusting but I think it's a legitemate concern! Also: Nana died of a heart attack from taking a constipation cure that was too much for her. She was getting forgetful and didn't think she'd pood for days, so she took the pill, and they found her on the bathroom floor a day later. Point being, if you worry you are getting forgetful, write a poop journal. If you're not passing a ton of stinky gas, if you're not suffering pain, you may not be backed up. You may have pooped but just forgotten it. xx

PS give your grandson lots of fat. KFC, bread with a ton of butter. back in the day we'd be given a cup of caster oil with a few tbsp of orange juice on top and a segment of lemon to chase it. Pretty awful but it worked. You need to review the diet your grandchild is eating. there is no way a 7 yr old would normally be constipated. supply lots of drinks (milk? watered down fruit juice?) as much fruit as you can talk him into (not bananas or apples, theyre binding fruits, but oranges, melons, berries, kiwifruit, whatever he will eat) and brown bread, not white, weetbix for breakfast... what is he eating? my motherly heart is all concerned for the poor dear.

Debbie -- sounds like he's already seen a doctor for the Encopresis diagnosis. The following is from the Cleveland Clinic: "It’s important that your child’s diet DOESN'T contain foods high in FAT and SUGAR. Instead, add FIBER to your child’s diet. Foods high in fiber include: Beans and lentils. Vegetables (broccoli, asparagus). Fruits (berries, apples). Whole grains (pasta, brown rice)." the carb conscious and carb balance tortillas have around 12g of fiber (if that would help). good luck 😥 sounds painful

@justbananas if you knew how much rot some doctors have told me, you'd want to make sure... fat is a good laxative. caster oil was the tried and true laxative of my youth. In a perfect world, lots of exercise and water will move anything. Second choice is kiwifruit (2 or 3 a day) but I've already suggested that to Debbie. Anyway all the best. :)
