JustBananas's Journal, 10 Dec 22

Dropped 1.5 lbs. this week, which is good considering that my exercise took a hit. Work has everyone racing to meet deadlines ahead of holiday vacations, and normally I do cardio during my lunchbreaks. Faced with the decision of fitting it in or getting enough rest, I chose sleep. Next week will be no different in terms of longer hours at the office, but I should have plenty of time to bang out exercise the final 2 weeks of December.

Buying groceries this weekend and making Channa Masala, Caponata, and Ratatouille. Food prep is everything. I ate a lot of salads this week and am now craving warm comfort meals.

Tracking my calorie intake and it is absolutely obnoxious when cooking from scratch. I can tell though that I rarely even hit 1250 kcals a day, so I'll stop recording it soon.

I always dread holidays even though I don't get into them as I watch other people get stressed to the breaking point and it affects me. LOL.

Nice drop. Even if you don’t hit your year end goal at least you have some momentum. Keep it up

@Morticia: I kind of like the adrenaline rush of multiple deadlines at work; they're mentally challenging and rewarding, too. But it does take away from things that currently matter to me, namely time for exercise. I'm still doing my resistance bands workouts in the mornings, but cardio is taking a backseat during the workweek.

@Russell: I may not get to all 8 pounds, but I will be thrashing to break 129.9 by New Years Eve. 👁️🏆

nice job. lunch walks are for my sanity as well as the cardio. I left my walling shoes home the other day and went power walking in work boots not nearly as pleasant 🙃

@Otb: Exactly. The same goes for power walking in heels.😄👠

Rest is as important as exercise. Probably more so. And sounds like the crunch is only temporary. You'll get back at it soon 👍

It's tough when work is demanding. This is why many nurses are obese. We rarely get a break during 12-13hrs, then we go home completely exhausted. You end up eating whatever and have no time nor energy to workout because you have to do it again in another 9hrs. Everyone needs to make time for and take care of themselves. Sometimes this means changing jobs. And I know that it hard for most of us. But your health is more important than your job. If it is just holiday time, that's different. Just do the best you can during those more demanding times.

@Wyo: Sleep is necessary to think straight when I'm working. @Daddy: the long hours this month are only because everyone's off for the last 2 weeks of the year, so we're clearing deadlines ahead of schedule. I got in a workout yesterday and this morning before the rain started, so I'm making do. Still sticking to approx. 1200 kcals/day, so the loss may be a little slower until next weekend. I can't go lower and think accurately (I don't take vitamins or supplements, so those 1050-1200 kcals are necessary to get nutrition).

@Daddy (Pt. 2): cracks me up how many nurses smoke and are obese. They are anti-health! Why??? They burn mad calories all day from being on their feet (high NEAT). Just eat an apple, not a vending machine snack. Pack a lunch. It should be no different than any other job. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think nurses can end up less healthy (in various ways) because of the stress of the job. Cortisol can mess you up, even if you’re getting a lot of steps and have good health info. Big thanks and wishes for holiday relaxation to all the nurses and health care workers (and the firefighters!) out there.

The weight issue amongst nurses is, I think at an all time high. I spend a fair amount of time hanging around health facilities the last couple of years and it has become very noticeable. Breaks my heart. How can teach what we can’t practice. I even know a few respiratory therapists who smoke. Drives me Bo keys.

@kenna, of course Dr’s and Nurses are just human beings too but I understand what you are saying. When I was at 281 my doctor wanted to give me pills for blood pressure, pills for diabetes, more pills for cholesterol. No nutritional discussion. No exercise advice. My insurance company will pay for meds but not for a nutritionist. Eating good food costs so much More than processed garbage. Smoking confuses the hell out of me and always has. Oh hell just ranted in a big circle without really saying anything

@Kenna and @Russell: it’s a credibility issue. I don’t take health advice from smokers or heavy people— even medical staff— and certainly not FS members!

Looks like your doing great justbananas and enjoy making your comfort food.

What all do you put in your caponata? I’ve never had it and it looks/sounds delicious. I see a few variations online..

I agree on the advice from smokers. I see it is a moral issue and who really can smoke knowing the dangers? I work with 3 smokers and it drives me nuts seeing them kill themselves on cancer stick at a time.
