JustBananas's Journal, 20 Apr 21

So for the past couple of weeks I have been trying out "French Women Don't Get Fat" diet, but the scale has not budged (Grrrrrrr!!!). The diet may be a better approach for maintenance, but for weight loss, I'm not seeing results.

So I have switched gears and am now using "The Beverly Hills Diet" (the original from 1981) by Judy Mazel. I think this one is perfect for me, in that it focuses on mad amounts of fruit (my favorite food!) for the first 5 weeks (and every morning thereafter), there's unlimited amounts (so no calorie counting), and I can graze all day long (which I am prone to do, since it takes me forever -- 2 hours -- to eat a meal). No added sugar or salt is allowed, nor processed foods, sugar substitutes, sodas, milk or cheese (no biggie as I am lactose intolerant and avoid processed foods anyway).

Positives:
1. Yummy fresh fruits (papaya, pineapple, mango, grapes, watermelon) that are readily available year round at my local supermarket;
2. Introduces items that I've never tried before (Nutritional Yeast, raw & unhulled sesame seeds, and unprocessed wheat bran flakes). Ordered these on Amazon today;
3. No calorie counting (Despite my mad dislike of this, I am tracking this on F.S. anyway, but just for 5 weeks);
4. Unlimited eating, with few exceptions (e.g. butter, bananas, dried fruit, bread). For this reason/excuse, but also because I love new gadgets, I purchased a food scale.

Negatives:
1. Expensive -- exotic fresh fruit is not cheap;
2. Assumes that one is a meat-eater or pescatarian -- steak and lobster are on the menu -- (I'm vegan/vegetarian), and the only non-meat protein allowed is nuts;
3. Rules on food combining make for tricky maneuvering (no mixing carbs with proteins, and this book considers ALL legumes (e.g. lentils, beans) to be a natural hybrid of 1/2 carbohydrate & 1/2 protein).

I'm on Day 2 so far, and will weigh in this weekend to see how it's going.

I remember that old Beverly Hills diet book. Never read it or tried it so this should be interesting.😊 Aren’t you French JustBananas? I am and my mother ate and ate and ate. Always beautiful and thin. It might just be her high metabolism that I didn’t inherit, but she was always on the go too. Good Luck!👍🌺🌸

Hi Shrewd: I am 1/4 French, 1/4 Slovenian, and 1/2 English. In truth, I've been thin-normal my whole life; it's just this past couple of years that I started a new (desk) job and just stuffed my face all day long. Nothing to do with metabolism. 🙁 Covid-quarantine has been excellent for me to get back to my old eating habits, thankfully.

I am a short person - most of the advertised diets are just too high in calories for me to lose weight. I am looking at one now, and the total for each day is a couple hundred calories more than I eat now and I am currently plateaued for the month because of it. I know for myself, if I don't count calories I just don't lose at all.

Abbadabba -- this diet is very low in calories! Check out my diet log and you'll see that even stuffing myself with 5 cups of fresh mango for dinner (that's 6 mangoes!), I still came in below 900 calories for the day. No hunger on this diet.

And today's breakfast is 5 cups of fresh papaya -- under 300 calories!

Let us know how it works out for you

I hope it works for you. The food combining rules would drive me crazy, but I know that they can work for some because they tend to make it less tempting to eat too much.

So you've never had nutritional yeast before? You're in for a treat - I love that stuff so much!

Chevre - the food combining is only painful if you're vegan or vegetarian and want to get protein. For everyone else, having a steak with butter and a shrimp cocktail, it's easy. This diet does allow carb combos (e.g. pasta primavera, spaghetti with tomato sauce and mushrooms/peppers/onions and garlic bread, veggie stir-fry, or garden salads with sesame dressing). The way I see it, if you were doing atkins, you would eat a meal of just salmon or steak or eggs & sausage or bacon with no issues. This diet is kind of like that when it comes to protein.

Serious question. Does the book address cocktail events?

Kenna -- I really hope this works, because I am getting annoyed with the scale being stuck. I have another 11 pounds to lose before the majority of my clothes will fit again!

The addition of a food scale yields fantastic results for portion control. Good luck with your new regimen

I love trying new diets. I tend to get bored, overeat, get angry with myself, and THEN try a new diet to reset. All that fruit sounds heavenly 😋

Katsolo -- alcoholic drinks are allowed. In fact, the diet even has scheduled days with champagne, vodka and wine! Vodka is considered a veggie carb, and the champagne and wine are considered fruits. The food combining mixes the drinks in. In fact, the diet considers social events to be mandatory while dieting, works in multiple menu items from restaurants, and stresses not dieting in a bubble. The idea is to teach how to eat while out & about, living a normal life. That way there's no "falling off the diet wagon."

Fracta -- the nutritional yeast is arriving via Amazon today! It's not scheduled yet on the diet (everyday is planned out on this thing for 5 weeks straight), but I will be ready when it does. I know some people use the nutritional yeast as a substitute for parmesan cheese.

@Tandtr - for most of the food, like the fruit, the scale isn't even necessary, because you eat unlimited amounts. @Rckc - the fresh fruit is amaaaaazing! But it is expennnnnsive to be buying 7 pounds of papaya and 6 mangos for just one day of eating!

I don't claim to be an expert in any area, but fruit = fructose (sugar), right? I only take in fruit around my intense workouts, otherwise, as I understand it, all that sugar goes straight into storage. Good luck, hope it works out for you!

I’ll be interested in your results and personal experience with this woe. (Very curious 🧐)

Semiller80, that's a misconception. The fructose in fruit is not fattening or harmful. The fructose/glucose combination in sweetened beverages, however, has been shown in some studies to increase liver fat even absent a caloric surplus, so that's something to consider. But fruit is fine. It's a myth pushed by anti-fruit (and usually pro-sat fat that increases liver fat even MORE) evangelists.
