Debbie Cousins's Journal, 01 Oct 23

Sorry I was so late in setting up next week's Daily Accountability Challenge 2023-#40. It is all set up now, along with #41 and #42. This week has been a doozie for me! It took me a full 48 hours at 10% function to recover from the birthday party for my grand daughter, and then another 24 hours at only 50% function. Today is the first day I have gotten up at a reasonable time and have any hope of having a productive day. It's 6:30am, and so far I've set up the three Daily Accountability challenges, sent out this week's Invitations, and have done two of the four days I was behind on my Bible Reading (going to do yesterday's reading now). Only did 7 of 18 PT exercises yesterday - NONE on Thursday or Friday! Haven't gotten in a full 4 miles of walking since last Monday! I was baking and cooking on Tuesday and Wednesday, and only got in 2.6 and 2.9 miles. On Thursday and Friday (when I was half dead), I only walked 1.1 and 1.3 miles. Yesterday, I managed to get in 2.6 miles. Haven't done any walking or PT exercises yet today, but I'm going to really try to get back up to 4 miles today and to do my all my PT exercises at least once (supposed to do them all twice). Knee has been hurting all week at a #5 pain level, even with round-the-clock Tylenol and Advil. Tooth has been hurting at a level #4 all week. Not a very "cheery" report today. Maybe by the end of the day I'll have something positive to report.

Thank you Windy Day, rhontique, and Morticia, for the prayers and good wishes. That means a lot. I’ve gotten all my PT exercises done, but I’m having a hard time getting motivated with the walking again. Only done 1.5 miles so far today, and bedtime is in 3 hours. I think I’ll have to tackle it 1/2 hour at a time, then ice. Only way to finish is to START walking. I’ll do that now. 1/2 mile. I can do this. (Five more times? Not so sure.)

Why walk with knee pain so bad?

Debbie, Just keep at it!

I admit I don't read most journals thoroughly or consistently. I've often read your journals and know you drink lots of diet coke, and like me, sometimes eat Hawaiian dinner rolls and write about pain and walking. I went back through your journals and I didn't realize you had knee replacement surgery. So maybe that's why you walk in spite of the pain? I know my brother in law had the surgery, rested a few weeks is as good as new. Same with my neighbor. I'm a baby when it comes to pain. I always feel like resting whatever is hurting until it heals. Didn't mean to be nosey or judgy.

Hopefully you are doing better. Have you asked your doc why you are experiencing what i would term a significant amount of pain 2 months post op?

Susannebuckley, you can only sign up for the challenges from the website, I believe - not from the app. Click on “Challenges” and search for “Daily Accountability 2023-#40” which starts today. You have til the end of the day to join this week’s challenge. If you miss it, you can sign up for #41 in the same way. You only do the mini-challenges that apply to your Way of Eating.

Fritzy 22, I didn’t take your question as “nosy or judgy” - a legitimate question. Both my Surgeon and Physical Therapist say, “Let your pain be your guide.” Because of that, I’ve cut back this whole week from 4 miles a day down to between 1 mile to 2.9, and I’ve skipped PT a couple days after abusing my knee by overdoing it to cook and bake for a birthday party. Thankfully, I won’t have to do that again until 11/9, for my twin friends’ birthday - but it won’t be as elaborate, and no baking involved because they’re diabetic.

Yearofhealth2023, I saw the surgeon two weeks ago, and he said the pain was normal and could continue for up to a year until I’m completely recovered. Part of my problem this week has been the weather! BOTH knees have been hurting. And, on top of that, there’s been the toothache. NOT a good week. I feel like I’m getting out of the HABIT of walking 4 miles a day, though, and that scares me! I really want to get there again, and work back up to 6 miles a day! Only got in 2.3 miles yesterday (Sunday), but I got in both sets of all my PT exercises. Seems to have to be an either/or thing this week. On a bright note, I’ve been using the silicone scar tape and my scar looks GREAT! Thanks for that tip. Now, if only it would feel as good as it looks!

Yikes! Good news on the silicone tape. Can you post a pic of scar? Ive just started using.

I understand you want to keep up your good habit of walking. Try to remember you are still in recovery mode & may not want to stress your body further by taking on such huge tasks as preparing elaborate meals. It's good you don't plan to do that til November. You give a lot to those you love. They may have to understand, that while you're recuperating, the celebration needs to be curtailed a bit.

What persistence you call up. You are inspiring. I love your "i'll do all I can do" attitude. thanks so much for keeping the Daily accountability challenge going for all of us. It helps.

Thank you for setting up the challenges Debbie, and you certainly don't need to apologize. Also, you can take me off your invitation list, I always sign up. I'm sorry you're in so much pain, please take care of yourself.
