Hipaagrammy's Journal, 24 Jul 15

The instant I tapped the "save" button on Monday's journal entry my phone rang. It was a family emergency...the kind that has you jump up, throw on some clothes and rush out the door with only a protein bar and a bottle of water...so there went all my good intentions for Monday. I got home late, exhausted, and discouraged about ever finding balance in my life.

Tuesday I was able to get in my first one-hour elliptical workout in almost a month. I had to dial the resistance down to 8 (from 10), but I was able to get through it and I felt sooooo accomplished! After that GoodMan and I headed out of town until late on Wednesday. We have a birthday party for GD#6 and a graduation open house for GD#2 planned this weekend at our house. I was able to get a lot of the list-making, emails, and mental prep done while riding in the car and staying at the hotel, but that didn't get any of the physical work done so I've been busy with that ever since. I wasn't able to work out at the hotel gym on Wednesday because we had to check out very early to make our way across the state for yearly doctor's dermatologist appointments. Mine went well - no new skin cancers...they found another spot to biopsy on Goodman (waiting for results).

I was able to get in another one-hour elliptical workout on Thursday - yippee! And then I spent the rest of the day grocery shopping and cleaning guest rooms and guest bathrooms. That just leaves cleaning the main part of the house, porch, deck, and pool area for today...along with another hour on the elliptical. It sounds like a lot, but I don't have any little people to take care of (or to go behind me making messes) so it should be do-able.

Finding balance in my life has got to be one of my biggest challenges. I REALLY want to exercise and eat healthy, log my food intake, journal my thoughts, as well as spend time reading my bible and praying...but it seems the "urgent" always interferes with my plans. I always thought it was a case of me not being able to say "no", or not asking for the help I need, but I'm now sure that isn't the case. This week I've said no to baking cakes for both parties, babysitting for two different son's children, and loaning my car out. I've also sent emails to all my kids and adult grandkids asking for help preparing for the upcoming parties...(can you hear the silence?)...I think they'll step up to the plate when the clean-up is necessary, but it sure would be nice to have someone come alongside and say "What can I do to help?"

Anyway, that's my pout/rant for today. I need to find a way to put more balance in my life. Getting back to writing journals is one of those steps for me. If you made it all the way to the end - thanks for listening!

Hope everything is OK with your family emergency. Life often seems to get in the way of my plans as well. I keep adding exercise that I can do at home when time is limited and sometimes you just have to eat as close to your plan as you can. I've kept my plan very flexible as my life can be crazy as well, though not as hectic as yours. Balance is a hard thing to find , I know that is a major challenge for me. Have a terrific weekend!

Finding balance has always been a challenge for me as well. Life keeps seeming to get in the way of my beautifully laid plans. I have found the best way to do it is have the groundwork laid--plan out meals, have healthy snacks handy, for example. Then, when life throws you a curve, you are not completely out of your depth. I am sorry to hear about your family emergency, but it sounds like you had the right idea, grabbing your protein bar on the way out the door. Nice job with your workouts. Good luck with your busy weekend.

I hope everything turned out ok with your family emergency. It sounds like maybe if you just don't do everything they expect of you for a few times, maybe they will respond by helping out more. It's worth a try. Also, as you said, asking for help is very important. I've known & heard of many women who do everything for their families, then get frustrated that no one ever helps, but yet they never ask for help. So, everyone probably assumes they've got it all in control & they don't even think to offer help. If you try asking for help you may find more willing hands than you expect ~ or not. I think the challenge to finding that balance in life is a combination between life getting in the way, & that it's easy to find excuses not to do what we really don't want to do in the first place. The first one we can't avoid, but the 2nd is something we all need to wrestle with on a daily basis, deciding if we're just making excuses, or if there is a legitimate reason why we can't do what we know we should. At least I've found that's how it is for me, not trying to judge or condemn you in any way. I whole-heartedly applaud you for sticking to your workouts & staying on track despite all you have going on! I'm glad for you that they didn't find any new skin cancers, & am praying for Good Man to be well. ~ Hugs, GLAMMER

No way would I make an hour on the elliptical!! WTG!! I'm lucky to make 10 min before my legs give out. Glammer has some good points. I know I'm bad about not asking but my kids are not really close by and have busy lives with jobs and kids to keep up with. I've decided the kids are old enough to come help Gramma now and then so the triplets are here helping me for a few days. I ended up with them a few days before I had planned so meals were really wonky Friday night and yesterday, all is good. We will go do something fun as well. Not sure what yet.
