JustBananas's Journal, 20 Apr 21

So for the past couple of weeks I have been trying out "French Women Don't Get Fat" diet, but the scale has not budged (Grrrrrrr!!!). The diet may be a better approach for maintenance, but for weight loss, I'm not seeing results.

So I have switched gears and am now using "The Beverly Hills Diet" (the original from 1981) by Judy Mazel. I think this one is perfect for me, in that it focuses on mad amounts of fruit (my favorite food!) for the first 5 weeks (and every morning thereafter), there's unlimited amounts (so no calorie counting), and I can graze all day long (which I am prone to do, since it takes me forever -- 2 hours -- to eat a meal). No added sugar or salt is allowed, nor processed foods, sugar substitutes, sodas, milk or cheese (no biggie as I am lactose intolerant and avoid processed foods anyway).

Positives:
1. Yummy fresh fruits (papaya, pineapple, mango, grapes, watermelon) that are readily available year round at my local supermarket;
2. Introduces items that I've never tried before (Nutritional Yeast, raw & unhulled sesame seeds, and unprocessed wheat bran flakes). Ordered these on Amazon today;
3. No calorie counting (Despite my mad dislike of this, I am tracking this on F.S. anyway, but just for 5 weeks);
4. Unlimited eating, with few exceptions (e.g. butter, bananas, dried fruit, bread). For this reason/excuse, but also because I love new gadgets, I purchased a food scale.

Negatives:
1. Expensive -- exotic fresh fruit is not cheap;
2. Assumes that one is a meat-eater or pescatarian -- steak and lobster are on the menu -- (I'm vegan/vegetarian), and the only non-meat protein allowed is nuts;
3. Rules on food combining make for tricky maneuvering (no mixing carbs with proteins, and this book considers ALL legumes (e.g. lentils, beans) to be a natural hybrid of 1/2 carbohydrate & 1/2 protein).

I'm on Day 2 so far, and will weigh in this weekend to see how it's going.

And fruit = fructose. Another misconception. Read up about it.

I meant "fruit (not equal to) fructose"

LaughingChevre is correct about the fruit thing! was about to say that too. un-natural Fructose (usually added) in other food “products” is different then the natural occurring kind in fruit. Much of that is slower digested due to the fiber content anyways. About the whole “unlimited fruit” part of the book, I’d change that to “mindful amounts”, granted you can have a lot of fruit and be satiated, but that’s also the problem with the Weight Watchers diet, unlimited fruits. Which adds calories up fast when having as much as you want, and can knock your deficit down or out, depending on how many other foods are eaten in total. I really don’t get their reasoning of don’t combine foods together 🤨. But hey it’s Beverly Hills! heh 😋

If you only eat 900 calories a day, the sugar (in anything) won’t turn to fat. It will be burned first and then you’ll start burning stored fat. All of these diets are tricks to get into calorie deficit.

That was not a diss, BTW.

LaughingChevre, thank you for the encouragement to learn more. I read up about this topic for myself, rather than just going off of my preconceived notions. What I read is that "too much sugar of ANY kind causes blood sugar to rise, which triggers insulin release. Since insulin is a storage hormone, it likes to store excess blood sugar as fat, particularly belly fat. And excess sugar consumption has been linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes." (Womens Health Magazine) So, my take away is that I'll continue to consume fruit in moderation.

Absent a caloric surplus, insulin cannot cause fat storage. I would suggest a better source than a popular health magazine, and even better, multiple sources and meta-analyses. Follow whichever way of life you prefer, but I'd encourage you not to question other people about their way of life and spread misinformation (such as fruit=fructose, which is completely incorrect) unless you are certain of what you are saying.

By the way, it's completely normal for post-prandial BS to increase (relative to the fasted state), for insulin to be released, and for all this to return to baseline in a normal amount of time in healthy subjects who don't have impaired glucose tolerance or in impaired pancreas. If they are not consuming excess overall calories, there is no reason to fear fruit.

I eat a large bowl of fruit every morning for breakfast along with what ever else I choose. It never stopped me from losing. And I love the whole vodka is a veggie & wine is a fruit 😁

Good stuff 👍

High carb, low-fat diets are healthy too, and good for everything including improved blood sugar control and less insulin resistance. Enjoy carbs if that's what makes you happy, just stay in energy balance. And fruit is one of the healthiest carbs you can get, and WILL make it easy to eat low-cal. JB mentioned eating large amounts of fruit (6 mangoes!) and not even reaching 1000 calories.

LaughingChevre, and Justbananas for that matter, no judgement or offence was intended. Justbanana's post is public and open for discussion, hence the comment option. I believe that honest learning should always be occurring, and I'm glad there are people on here who know their stuff. Please share your knowledge, it's welcomed, but no need to be snippy.

@SeMiller-- this diet is not recommended for diabetics, and it's REAALLLLY difficult to overeat fruit. I had 5 cups of mangos yesterday (500 calories), and 5 cups of papaya (275 cals) this morning. That is a TON of food. It's bulky and full of fiber & water to fill you up. I couldn't even finish the papaya this morning (too full, even though it took me 3 hours to eat all of it!). Everything gets broken down into sugar in the body, and it gets stored as fat IF you don't burn it all off. Simple.

Semiller80, my apologies for getting snippy. I get upset when I see claims about insulin, fructose, and especially fruit that are half-true or have a kernel of truth but are not placed in the proper context or disregard the overall picture. Some of these types of claims about insulin and carbs in general (but esp. fruit and legumes) on social media caused problems for me for two years, made me fear food, and resulted in constant struggles with eating, weight, and health, that have taken two years to get over, mostly.

Love2Educate: you are exactly correct. I don't know any adult who could gain weight or fat from only consuming 900 calories in a day. As a cleanse day, on Saturday the plan is to eat watermelon all day. One cup of watermelon is 50 calories. A whole watermelon is about 7 cups (350 calories total). For me to overeat and store fat, I'd have to eat about 5-6 whole watermelons in one day! In all likelihood, I will only be able to eat 2 watermelons (14 cups), for a grand total of 700 calories.

😊 It's all good

@Deadpool: the food combining is about what is easiest to digest vs. what combinations will take forever to digest. Ever woken up the next morning and not eaten till lunch because you were still full from dinner the night before? This book classifies that as mis-combining foods at a meal. Cheese is a prime example. Very difficult for people to digest. It disrupts the digestion of the foods that the body finds easy to digest, like carbs (veggies, bread). The goal in this book is to move foods through the body at a reasonable pace so as to avoid mad indigestion, gas, heartburn, overloading of gastric acid in the stomach, etc.

@Chevre: thank you for all the defense of fruit! I never got why it has been vilified. Humans are by nature fruit eaters! No one I have ever met has gotten fat from eating it. In fact, all the thin people I know eat it for snacks (instead of vending machine food), and many cultures have it for dessert (rather than pies, cakes, etc.). I accepted the fact that I am a bulk eater, someone who likes to graze all day, and fresh fruit & fresh veggies fit right into that WOE at minimal caloric expense. Give me a huge salad instead of a piece of meat the size of a deck of cards ANYDAY!

Just bananas— so where is your protein coming from? How about your other vital nutrients? ANY DIET works in the short term if you follow it. So what would your plan be after you are fitting into some clothes that you have. Portion control and moderation is a good general overall plan. Healthier eating most of the time and less healthy choices or choices less conducive to maintaining your preferred weight just once in a while. It allows you to eat normal food, live and eat I’m the real world. Forget the word diet. It is such a destructive word . You are choosing to make a lifestyle change that will benefit you and your family way into the future.
