Kat, I pressed and pressed and pressed for one of my own, but my folks just said I had the best of all worlds having horses to enjoy without the cost. I guess they were right... But, I was still bitter because my "second father" figure and mentor wanted to give me the most amazing buckskin quarter horse when I was about 13. Man I wanted "Dusty" with all my heart! 😁

Peeper, I think you and I could talk horses for hours... Days! 😁 What fun memories you have. Some people think horses are lacking in personality... You just have to know them! Well, some are complete pains, but the sweet ones can be such fun. I can just imagine your horse twisting around begging for treats! This girl likes peppermint candy! I wonder what she would think of sweet tarts... Snickers?!! 😁 How many do you have now? Honestly, you should post a picture (s) of your herd! I know they provide some gym time!!!! 😁

Actually mine are basically pets now. Ones a pain and runs the others. He and the mare are the only ones I few comfortable riding after years of nobody riding them (mom passed, chemo etc). Harley tried to run Pistol when I try to ride her. She just balks thankfully but won’t move a muscle or just backs up until I can get him to leave her alone. The pony won’t take a step if is it on her lol. Only for my 6 yr old. Another is plain wild. He’s a big teddy bear but mom told me he’d never be a kids horse or even calm. Gets excited easily. With not having an enclosed area like a round pen that I can work with them individually I don’t feel it’s very safe. There’s a local trainer that occasionally rides horses out. I’ve considered hiring him but he’s so expensive! Plus I’d have to drive there every day to care for any horse we sent him. One of these days I just need to tie them up, put the excitable one in the trailer and just take Harley or Pistol for a ride in the big pasture. I’d feel safe doing that. But it’s a lot of work catching them up and anytime I think I will someone needs something or I have to take kids somewhere or Harley won’t let me catch him lol.

Bar, my horse from age 8-24, loved peppermints too. Didn’t care for the spearmint kind. Never gave him chocolate as I don’t share chocolate lol. We have Harley moms gelding, Blu my daughters gelding, Pistol the ‘spare’ mare and Nikki my kids pony/mini. Gave to us as a mini but sure looks like a Shetland. We also have Skeeter another daughters horse and Jessi an old mare at my uncles. He’s borrowing them for an extended period of time. Skeeter can be ridden but he likes to try and lay down with you. Jessi has arthritis too bad to be ridden. I’ll get a picture the next time they all come up! Harley is well trained and can be ridden with a lead rope only around his nose. Just not when he decides to take off after the others.

I don't like horses. Sent my mom a postcard when I was with my dad for the summer- "Went horse back riding. Got a stick in my eye" It had a chipmunk on it from some place we were at in Wisconsin. My horse was stupid and I was probably 7 or 8 and it dragged me into a tree branch. Needless to say... Not my favorite animal. ;)

Peeper, goodness you have a herd! I would say maybe when things settle down you will have more time to focus on riding, but I have seen your coming schedule!!! Maybe in a couple years??!! :) Maybe you just need to take a day and enjoy your critters! catch everybody and go for a real ride on one of the "safe" critters! I totally get needing a safe place to ride green or out of training horses. When I was younger, I would ride anything with four legs and take on any project. Now I want something not likely to kill me! The last filly I broke was 20 years ago! I would still ride something that isn't extremely broke, but only if I had access to a good arena and used a helmet... Something I never cared about when I was not an "old lady!"

Princess! I'm not sure I can be your friend anymore! 😁 Hahaha! You know, honestly, people often have bad experiences with horses when they are young and hate them forever. I worked for seven summers at two different ranch camps teaching kids to ride. Some of those kids came in terrified and forced to come by their parents. A few good experiences and they usually at least began to feel comfortable around them. But, they sure aren't for everyone. And those of us who are diseased with the horse bug often have heartache when they are so expensive they can't be part of our lives! 😁 So, see, you are actually better off!

If anyone is interested in seeing this girl perform, here she is ridden by the son of my friend. He won the youth national championship on her. The mare is both owned and trained by my friend. I worked for and with her for so many years until... Too many kids took all my time! 😁 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n85-c9OcQeA
