My knee surgery finally happened two weeks ago. It looks like it has been a success; I have virtually no pain and very little swelling. It turned out there was a lot more damage in there than expected, which I'm told has all been repaired. The surgery took double the scheduled time. I am under strict instructions to put no weight on it for at least 6 weeks, so am on crutches and basically stuck at home with the occassional visitor until such time that I'm allowed to drive again.

This presents a whole new set of challenges. My main objective is not to gain any weight while I'm in this state. Clearly the gym is off limits, so the exercise programme has stopped. I'm worried about losing muscle and condition, but there is little I can actually do about that. I have a set of physiotherapy exercises that I am doing religiously. Essentially these involve tensing and relaxing the quads in my bad knee and trying to get to a point where I can extend my leg so that it is flat on the ground. The other set are all about bending my knee and regaining some movement. I'm in a leg brace, which is locked to stop me bending it beyond 90 degree. I can now bend it to the full 90 degrees, but I'm going to have to wait another 4 weeks before I can take it any further. The main thing at the moment is not doing anything stupid that will undo all the surgeon's good work.

As far as food goes I am essentially living on Huel. I've been using it as a meal alternative once or twice a day for just over a year now. Realistically there is very little I can cook for myself while balancing on one leg and trying to juggle crutches, so mixing up three batches of Huel a day is a pretty straightforward way to ensure I get enough nutrition without too much hassle. It is a bit boring though. This morning I have a strong craving for poached eggs on sourdough. As I have no way of acquiring either of those in the neighbourhood I am just going to resign myself to another filling beaker full of Huel. Yum!
