Does anyone know if there’s any science behind this? I’ve seen it floating around social media for a while and I keep forgetting to ask my doc/nutritionist...

This seems to be known as the “whoosh effect” amongst some groups. Although I have never researched the science behind it.

I like that name...guess I’ll look into it. Thank you

What I do know is that as far cells decrease in volume the space between the cells is taken up by water. I have never heard of the whoosh effect but when I looked into it there were a lot of diet sites stating fat cells were filled with water, but no science based sites I could find that back this up. The whoosh effect is probably based on the loss of water from between fat cells rather than within them. Please note this is my opinion based on my science knowledge, I haven't done a study to back it up.

Thank you for prompting me to check - I found an article which said “The actual science of fat loss<https://www.bmj.com/content/349/bmj.g7257> is that, as you lose weight, fat breaks down into carbon dioxide and water. Most of that is exhaled as carbon dioxide, Giancoli explains. The rest is excreted through water - which could be urine, sweat, or breath vapour.” The BMJ article was easy to read too. It’s a no to the whoosh effect for now in medical science.

I've always wondered - when you lose weight, where does the fat go? Thanks for enlightening me, I won't lose any more sleep wondering about it now.

Now that part I agree with 😁

It's oxygen that burns fat. This is why when I taught aerobics I made sure people weren't working so hard that they were gasping for breath. It was doing them no good. Big deep breaths and held before exhaling. Moderate exercise that allows this. Then the fat is either burned as energy/heat or sweated/urinated out.

This is all so good to know, now I understand why class instructors ask people to breathe! I always thought “....umm yeah?!” 🙈

It's a combustion reaction, you can't have combustion without Oxygen. This conversation has been really helpful, my cravings have been for diuretics and I didn't realise until I started looking into the question. I don't have alcohol or caffeine, but have been craving them and chocolate, (which is normal). Drinking more dandelion coffee should fix it. Thanks x

the " whoosh " is usually because of keto diets, when you are burning ketones for fuel , at the beginning the body uses the stored fat , the cell is kept open with water until your body realises that you aren't going to refuel with carbs and you get a sort of whoosh as the cell collapses and you drop the excess water . ( I lost 54 inches from my body 5 years ago doing keto )

I’ve learned a lot since I had a VSG in June, but mainly about nutrition and how to get more nutrients through smaller volumes of food (as well as supplementing). It’s good to get the other side of things too! Thanks everyone ☺️
