DairyKing's Journal, 03 Oct 12

I finally gave my Courage presentation late this afternoon to about 30 people. I count it an overwhelming success, and I'm so glad to have it done and over with. I began with a brief background of my military experience, and realized that none of the people in the room had been born when I started my military career, and I had more years at my present organization than 3/4 of the people in the room. I got a few chuckles and a number of personal responses thanking me for the presentation and emails telling me they really enjoyed it. The boss said I exceed his expectations. How could it be any better than that? Although I used some military analogies, it really wasn't about military leadership; it was about making the tough decisions in the workplace.

I had to stop at the home improvement store and pick up a garbage disposer that crapped out. It took me an hour to find all the contraptions I needed to reroute the plumbing under the sink. I had to bust butt to get home in time to feed the animals and watch the 1st presidential debate - which I'm doing right now.

DW got sick after radiation today; I suspect it may be do to the spaghetti and meat sauce she was tasting all day yesterday while cooking. So, she didn't plan on eating tonight, and I knew if I didn't stop and get something on the way home, I would be famished by the time I got there. So, I stopped at the Arby's drive-through and got a Turkey bacon club sandwich and diet coke. Maybe not the bestest choice in the world, but better than some I could have made. I'm still way below RDI, and we'll just have to see how much I'll have to indulge myself later tonight.

I see my next biggest challenge as exercising restraint when I go out to Texas. I always have a problem when I eat on the road; I think it's psychological in that I'll go through this whole trip, get back and feel like I missed something if I didn't indulge. Silly maybe, but who doesn't eat more when they travel?

So glad your presentation went well. Wanted to let you know I've read your comments on what DW has had to deal with over the years. Sounds to me like you've been her biggest supporter and I really appreciate that about you. BTW - as for your dinner last night - good to see you stepping away from all of that fried food. I think I hear your heart thanking you.

So happy that your Courage presentation got great reviews DK, I kinda thought that it would - due to your great communication skills and sense of humor. I know what you mean about the eating while travelling thing--I always think I am not getting the full experience unless I indulge in all the new choices I want to try when I am in the new place I am visiting. Usually involves lots of fat and sugar, my nemisis, but I'm sure you will employ great restraint and make wise decisions, unlike myself ;) What did you thik of the great debate? Being Canadian it always baffles me why the whole US election campaign goes on for soooooo long, and why only certain states vote?? I don't really understand the process obviously.

Ah, Newmooney, you would be surprised at how few Americans themselves understand the process for electing a president. The president is actually elected by the Electoral College (which is a process, not a place). The Electoral College is a provision in the Constitution that is a compromise between a National Popular Vote and the President being directly elected by Congress. The Electoral College consists of 538 Electors, and a majority of 270 Electors is required to elect a president. Each state has a number of Electors equal to the number of that state's Representatives in the House, plus two Senators. It is expected that the candidate that wins the popular vote for that state, will receive all the electoral votes pledged to him or her, although there is no law requiring that to happen. Electors are usually elected or assigned during the Conventions. Nobody has ever been prosecuted for refusing to vote according to their pledge. But, all states do, in fact, participate and count in the vote for the presidential candidate. Since the number of representatives directly correlates to the population in the state, some states have way more electoral votes than another. For instance, South Dakota has 3 electoral votes, while California has 55. So, obviously a candidate considers this when he is campaigning. As far as food while traveling, I suppose food only has as much control over us as we allow, but there is just something naughty about tasting foreign dainties - even if it is only a little outside our daily domain. Unfortunaely, like jet lag, it stays with you a while, and actually a lot longer than jet lag.

I am so happy to hear your speech went so well! I knew it would. You are a clever wit and your compassion and understanding of people had to be a winner. I am proud of you. Eating out in Texas will have it's challenges -- sample it all - in moderation. ;) Hugs!
