Windlepoones's Journal, 24 Nov 16

A busy day for me, it all kicked off a bit earlier than usual. At 07:00 I was out of bed showered, dressed and out of the house, sprint walking down to my local Aldi.

The reason, in their special Thursday offers I had noticed they were selling for one day only, passive noise reduction Bluetooth over the ear headphones, in a choice of colours either macho Black or a very fetching girly white trimmed with beigey gold ear muffs and head band. The price only £14.99…. OK, OK I hear you, for that price they had to be crap – right, but I wanted to try them, just in case.

In the weeks leading up to my purchase I had been researching the market by extensively reading reviews and visiting audiophile establishments, plugging in my familiar music, listening objectively and sorting the wheat from the chaff. The spec I wanted was Bluetooth headphones with switchable active noise reduction. Unfortunately in that spec, they get a tad expensive with Bose, Sennheiser and Sony leading the field at an eye watering £350.00.

As it happens I had just placed an order for a highly rated pair on-line at only a fifth of the price, with the option that if they didn’t come up to my expectations I could return them.

Any way long story short, I got to Aldi before the bulk of the crowds, yup it gets a bit busy in London. Elbowing my way through what resembled a cloud of locust shoppers. I managed to secure a pair of Girly white and beige headphones. No! Not because I wanted to look like a reject from the Village People. It was for Lulu Lowcarb, she had been moaning about her mobile phone’s earbuds continually falling out.

At home I plugged them into a charger for their required two hour initial charge. When they had completed the charged cycle it was acid test time. Placing them on my head I found they were surprisingly comfortable, certainly compared to some of the expensive stuff I had tried on. Some of the expensive ones felt like I had put my head in a vice.

Turning them on I was greeted by a matronly sounding female Chinese voice telling me, “Power ono” followed by a reassuring, “You are connekated”. Marvellous, I selected my workout playlist. Suddenly I was transported to a disco with infra base pounding out and the dulcet tones of Moloko singing “Bring it back”.

Jigging around my lounge to the next three tracks showing off my best John Travolta moves, my moggies appeared to get a little apprehensive, probably assuming I had become possessed. It was time to end the test and get myself off to my Thursday gym session.

What a result I would put these cans on a par with some well-known brands that I had tried out during the week retailing at £50 to £100. At £14.99 they were a steal.

I wanted to see if I could hack a two hour gym session so fuelling up on protein and fat, (A full English) I was off to the gym. I might add this time achieved without cremating any of the component parts.

No, I didn’t wear the girly cans in the gym although I did think about it for all of 10 seconds; I used my old black in ear sports phones. Well the girly ones would do nothing for my street cred unless of course I also wore some 80’s rainbow leg warmers and a Rambo head sweat band and claim to be doing it for a bet.

Anyway I did the two hour session utilising all the kit without straining, breaking or any of my aged bits falling off. I will probably sleep all day tomorrow – if the kitties let me. :o)

HiDoobs, Horses for courses, Lulu doesn’t need an ANR feature to block out the thumping Rap and Garage sounds of the otherwise obtrusive gym motivational video sound system. With ANR I can listen to my favourite music from the 30’s and 40’s without the gym sounds bleeding through. Just wearing the ANR cans with them activated, but no music playing is like being struck deaf. They were originally developed for jet fighter pilot communications to cancel out the external noise of the roaring engines. :o)

Brilliant post. Really enjoyed reading it. Agenthoover, can you confirm full name of the Koss Porta Pros. I've looked on Amazon (I live in Spain) and they seem to have a few Koss Porta Pros. They look like they might make a good present for my OH.

If I can figure out how to post a pic I will ... But they are called Koss Porta Pro ON EAR Headphones ... They have the adjustable metal headband ... I think they are the only ones that come in black red white or blue ...if that helps ... There ain't many things in life that I buy twice ...but I have 3 sets of these .. One for gym ..one for my laptop and one for my TV ... I'm greedy like that ...lol

Hi Agenthoover, I’m fairly sure I know the Koss Pro’s you mean. I agree with you they have great acoustic resolution plus they are compact, lightweight and robust, all at a great price point. They are iconic headphones, with a loyal following dating way back to the 80’s. If only I could make them work for me without being tethered to my iPhone, (Don’t want to damage it) and put up with the intrusive racket of a busy gym, then the Koss Pro’s would be in my first choice line up. Bluetooth uses signal compression and therefore introduces a degree of distortion, but like most things in life it’s a compromise. My reason for needing Bluetooth is the convenience and security of being able to leave my jacket with phone safely zipped inside a pocket in the middle of the gym. Where I can both see my jacket and still pick up my sound signal as I move from one piece of exercise kit to the next. I don’t think it’s possible to post a photo inside the Fat Secret’s BB comments. So I have sent you and Snoop Puss a personal eMail with a photo of the Koss Pro’s I believe you mean.

Agenthoover, I didn't get a notification either. But it's not the first time. If you have a look in your inbox (under "My messages"), you might spot it. Thanks to Windlepoones' comment, I came across a PM that had been waiting for me for two weeks, unread, because I didn't receive a notification.
