Windlepoones's Journal, 10 Oct 16

I started the day with a weigh in. Oh my, up 600grams. So I consoled myself with a cooked breakfast.

What a change in the weather. I used the central heating this morning and this evening. With rain forecast at 1pm I kicked off the day by mowing the lawn then hung out the laundry.

I went to use my car and noticed I had a nearly flat front tyre with a screw protruding from the centre of the tread. I phoned Kwik Fit for the cost of a vulcanised puncture repair. They quotes £25.00 and wanted the tyre for half a day. I called a local independent tyre place that quoted £7.00 to do the same work, but while I waited. No prizes for guessing who I used.

After dipping a toe into the world of spiralised veg we bought a spiraliser. Which one to buy was another fairly easy choice to make. The manual market leader is an Italian company called Poderno, but at over £100 there had to be a cheaper one available. Turning to the internet I soon found an identical looking product by Salter for just £14.99 – Argos.

The courgette, red onion, beetroot and carrot went through the machine. What a fun thing to use and so easy. By the time Lulu Lowcarb had sautéed the mix and added some extra ingredients we thoroughly enjoyed the spiralised meal with a side dish of salad and wine. I can see the spiraliser getting a lot of use.

Is the spiraliser easy to clean? I've been thinking of getting one.

Yes very easy to clean. The instructions say, "Not to be washed in a dishwasher". The screws are probably not stainless steel, so would possibly rust. They recommend cleaning by hand with a brush and soapy water. We used a tooth brush and found it quick and easy to clean. The reason for the brush is the blades are razor sharp and it's to protect your fingers. The veggie off cuts we put in a zip lock bag and pop in the freezer to be used later when we make our next stock pot.

I decided to buy a spiralizer. I ordered one from Amazon. The brand is Savisto £11 something. Came this afternoon, but not had chance to try it yet 😊

It looks exactly the same as the Salter that we bought from Argos. Try this as your first meal.... 1 x Courgette per person (Spiralised) 1 x Spanish onion between two (Spiralsed) 1/2 x Cup of cheddar cheese grated 50ml Double cream per serving. (Mixed with the cheese) Sauté the Courgette and onion in a knob of butter and one of coconut oil. 1 x teaspoon of mixed herbs. - That's what we had tonight. It was very tasty and filling too. Washed down with a couple of glasses of wine each. A satisfying LCHF meal.
