JockoT's Journal, 25 Feb 16

I found a article on My Fatsecret suggesting that the values you monitor (you know, choose up to six to display) should include Cholesterol. I know Carbs, Fat, etc, show gms, but what is the value for Cholesterol's units and how do you use it? Is it just if it is a big number it is bad, and if low or zero it is good?
Also, what does clicking the "Support" button do? Is it just a sort of "Like" button?

I have never noticed a cholesterol reading. I monitor sugar, fibre and protein closely. But my main weight loss tool is calories in/calories out. I like to keep it simple!

Cholesterol is usually measured in milligrams. There are two different types of cholesterol: a small amount comes from what we eat, but most of it is in our blood and is made by the liver. I am told that we should eat no more than 300mg of cholesterol a day. But cholesterol from food doesn't make that much difference compared to your blood cholesterol and high cholesterol is often genetic and not dietary. Hope this helps JockoT.

Thanks. mg and 300 a day are the values I was looking for. It will be interesting to see what figures it throws up, now I have included it to my table. I am on Statins for my cholesterol, so I suppose the less I add in through my diet, the better it will be.

I don't think that the cholesterol you consume affects blood cholesterol much. They used to think it did, but not any more, which is why it's now considered okay to eat eggs. However saturated fats allegedly do make a difference, as do trans fats, which used to be in everything, but are now pretty rare I think. Also, I'm told that we consume too much oil made from sources like sunflower seeds these days, and our omegas are out of balance! Apparently we should stick to olive oil, oil from certain seeds and nuts like walnuts, and get some fish oil, either from oily fish, or from fish oil supplements. But that is today's theory, tomorrow it might be different! Some say that butter is also okay, as long as the cows were fed on grass. However, it contains saturated fat, and I personally think if you have high cholesterol, maybe avoid it for now. I'm hoping that losing weight will also lower my cholesterol, so I can stop taking statins.
