mskestrela's Journal, 22 Nov 16

I don't know what I weigh. And I'm ok with that.
Today, one of my clients, a Thai lady in her 70's, brought me lunch. Tom Ke Gai. It's a spicy, sour chicken soup, and it is a marvel of flavor and texture. Chicken broth, coconut milk, exotic spices and herbs, mushrooms and lime juice. Just enough chili to give a mild burn at the back of the throat, but comforting at the same time. I'd make it with chicken thigh meat instead of breast, because the meat was a little dry, but it was so tasty.
My meal for the day, and SO GOOD!!!!!!!
My first experience with Thai food was horrible. There was some flavor in the dish I ordered that was nauseating, and I judged the whole of Thai cuisine from that...and avoided it ever since. I've been watching a travel vlogger who's based in Thailand for a while, and his videos make Thai food look very appealing! After today's lunch, I'm definitely going to be looking into more Thai recipes.
For the most part, Thai is very keto-friendly, if you leave out the ubiquitous rice. :/
Thanksgiving is upon us, and the temptations of comfort foods loom large. I'm wavering between going to a restaurant feast, and canning a big-ass bird for quick, easy meals for the next 2 years. What shall I do? :D

Sounds fantastic - I love Asian flavours be it from the Indian sub-continent or further east. Maybe you're one of those people who doesn't like coriander leaves (cilantro). There's a section of the population genetically disposed to finding the taste disgusting (similar to how some people can't stomach cabbage). That might account for your first experience. Of course, it might just have been something horrible - even the best cuisines have some duff dishes. Have fun, Kes

We have three lovely Thai restaurants where we live. I have to remind them not to put fish sauce in my food though. Apart from it not being vegetarian, I think the taste is disgusting. I don't know if a non-vegetarian would think the same though.

I've only had Thai food once, it was very good. There are no Thai restaurants in my rural neck of the woods, so I should investigate some recipes to fix at home. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving day.

Thai food is great! Haven't had it in a while, but is definitely on my list for when I start going out to eat again. I am cooking a Turkey so I can have the left overs. Love turkey and is on my list. It is just my hubby and I, so will make some mashed potatoes for him and dressing. I will just have salad and green beans with mine. I say make the Turkey. :)

@Fryxx, larb does sound good! Pretty easy to make, too. I'll give it a try.

@Phooka, I actually love coriander! I think it's lemongrass my palate objected to. It also might have been the fact that it was like eating fire. That foray was before I acquired a taste for hot, spicy food. Since then, I've learned to appreciate the subtle differences between types of chilis.

#Doobrie, it took me a while to appreciate fish sauce. I bought some for a recipe I was trying, and when I opened the bottle and smelled it, I almost pitched straight away! LOL! It smells like sweaty feet! But, used judiciously, it really does add a lot to a flavor profile.

@Rhontique, I wish I had at least tried Pho before going LCHF. I've heard it's wonderful! But noodles are definitely on the 'no-fly' list now. maybe when you have a chance to visit the big city, you can find a Thai restaurant.

@Chele, I think you've convinced me to get a turkey. Besides, I can do that in my comfy clothes. If I go out, I have to get dressed, do my hair, put on makeup..LOL.

Once a year a big turkey has a lot to offer, including awesome bone broth/soup. I'm looking forward to the soup!

Absolutely Kes, I plan on getting up, taking a shower and putting on a different pair of jammies. Tomorrow will definitely be all about comfort!!

Absolutely, Erika! Once I bone out the turkey, the bones and whatnots go into the stockpot. Yum!

Have a wonderful holiday! That soup sounds great, but I am a wimp when it comes to spicy...LOL

I'd be the same Kes, get a turkey and then you can chill out in your Jammie's while the bird cooks nicely Mmmmmm🐔🐔🐔

Actually, @MrsMaths, I'm going to bone out the turkey, and pressure can the meat in glass jars. It will store in the pantry for up to 5 years that way. It's so nice to be able to come home at the end of a busy day, open a jar of canned meat (I have all kinds) and throw together a healthy, preservative-free meal in 10 minutes.
