Don't know what induced me to try a hot chocolate drink on top of various other chocolates and sweets yesterday. The effect was pretty devastating. First the high levels of sugar sent my blood sugar rocketing so I felt jangled and was not able to sleep. I came downstairs at about 2.00 am and had some porridge (30g) with lactose-free milk (210 mls) and no sugar. This worked very well in that it sent me to sleep, but almost too well, because I didn't wake up again until 1.40 pm today. The whole experience has served a purpose, because it's making me face the real problem which is addressing the level of sugar in my diet. Basically, I love chocolate, but it doesn't love me. If I want to be rid of the somnolence and rebound insomnia, I have to get off the blood sugar roller-coaster with its hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia. The sad fact for me is that chocolate and added sugars have to go. Crisps are equally bad for my health for other reasons, since they contain abnormally high amounts of salt and saturated fat. No chocolate? no crisps? Help! how will this chocoholic crisp-loving person survive?

Not everything we find out about our bodies and what they can and can't tolerate is to our liking, sadly. Although maybe you could try the mint chocolate pringles from this Xmas - I heard they're so bad they'd put you off both crisps and chocolate for life! 😜 Joking apart, it sounds like you need a diversionary tactic pretty quickly. Have you tried hot milk with a little cinnamon?

I know how you feel Judy. No chocolates and no crisps it's a double blow. But I admit as I've got older I have not craved for chocolate of any kind. Never drank hot chocolate anyway X Love plain crisps with a crusty cheese roll though lol 🍫🍵

Thanks for the comments Phooka and Mrs M. My hunch is that if I keep off added sugars and junk food for a time, I'll begin to see improvements in the blood sugar problems. If I feel a little hypoglycaemic, I'll just have to reach for something more natural like a bit of fruit with something almonds, or like Phooka says, a small amount of hot milk with cinnamon. My GP has told me my problems are dietary and it's a matter of trying different approaches and seeing what works best. So far, my only test result is one which shows I have fructose malabsorption issues, but the GP has agreed to send me for tests at a hospital to try to work out what is happening with the blood sugar. I think the basic problem is simply the whole Paleo idea of an extended hunter-gatherer genotype, so I'll just have to stick to a natural diet with some controls on modern processed foods and also Neolithic foods. Might find I can return to some of these foods occasionally and in moderation, but to provoke a change, I'll have to do without my favourite chocolates and crisps at least for a time. Waaaaah....! (me crying at the thought). The interesting thing is that I come from a family with early onset Alzheimer's and I can't help wondering if there is a link.

Gosh, PJ, that sounds like a good reason to establish a healthy way of eating. I know diabetics and prediabetics have difficulty sleeping if they have carbs shortly before bedtime. And because they don't sleep well, their brains don't get their overnight cleaning. Which can lead to problems . I see you had lactose-free milk with your porridge. Is that the kind of milk you generally drink? Have you tried other milks, such as almond milk?
