Paleo Judy's Journal, 29 Nov 16

I'm going to start recording my falling asleep after meals to see if I can identify any food triggers. I'm suspecting high glycaemic foods, fat and salt aren't too good for me.

Last night fell asleep abruptly after eating lamb chop (which had fat on it) with mint sauce (which contained sugar) and woke on the settee at 4.40 am. Had brief somnolence for half an hour at lunchtime after sausages (similar to blacking out) and this evening had brief bout of somnolence after eating 2 packets of crisps (contain fat and salt); this was together with low-fat yoghurt and blueberries. I get insomnia after big bouts of somnolence and this can be helped by porridge (slow release carbs) and lactose-free milk (boosts insulin). Somnolence has now been virtually every day for a number of years and I have had problems with falling asleep on buses and going past my stop. Exercise seems to help if I do a lot of it, such as a session at the gym.

May collect a few of these entries and then have a word with the GP about it and get referred to a dietitian or endocrinologist. My weight has been brought down to 10 stone from 12 stone, but the somnolence seems to be as bad as ever. Fat Secret will be useful, because the dietitian will be able to see what I have been eating in detail.

That sounds like a pretty extreme condition, Judy. I hope you get help identifying the triggers and can work to a solution. All the best

Thank you Phooka. It has been a bit frustrating to wake up on a bus at night and find out I've gone about half an hour beyond my stop. The bus drivers have begun to get to know me because I fall asleep so much!

That does sound serious. When you mentioned it before, I misunderstood and thought it was just a case of nodding off on the settee in front of the telly after a nice supper. I hope you manage to work out what triggers it. Good luck and best wishes.
