CatHerder's Journal, 26 Mar 16

I've been relatively quiet so as to try to relax about some comments made in this forum. I assume that most people mean well but can cause issues not so much with what they say but more in the way they say it.

I would like to preface my comments with the statement that I support all diets that lead to a sustainable caloric deficit that can be transitioned into maintenance. I even support medical interventions such as HcG, stimulants and bariatric surgery. I know the desperation that can come with repeatedly failed diets from personal experience so I have a feeling for the mindset of a dieter. I am here to support people no matter which path they choose.

Dispensing Medical Advice

I have read several comments over the past months where people have said to try a certain diet to correct medical issues. This can cause issues on several fronts.

People with chronic condition, especially if you are on medication for diabetes and thyroid issues, need to discuss dietary changes with their doctor. Just because someone says that you should be on X diet or Y meal pattern doesn't mean it is safe for everybody all of the time. This can have serious consequences for those on medication that causes changes in glucose metabolism (diabetics). Can you imagine what would happen to an insulin dependent diabetic reduced carbs without adjusting dosage? Even metformin can cause issues as it reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver (reduces gluconeogenesis).

While it is appropriate to suggest looking into a particular diet, I think stating unequivocally that a certain diet can correct medical issues is very dangerous.

Saying Calories/Calorie Counting Doesn't Matter

This is a pet peeve of mine. The one thing I notice is that the people saying this have what looks like pretty complete food logs or eat the same thing day-in/day-out, indirectly controlling calories.

If you are just starting weight loss or are having trouble loosing weight then you need to log what you are eating to see where you are at. I also recommend weighing and measuring foods at least for a while until you get better at estimating. It has been shown that most people are notoriously bad at estimating the amount of food they eat. Without seeing what a certain portion size really is it's hard to get a handle on estimating. Also the need for accurately logging everything you eat cannot be emphasized enough. You can probably go to estimating after about amount of measuring. Or you can be OCD like me and only estimate when eating out, measure when eating at home.

Personal Bias

This is another peeve. This one is repudiation of research that does not support a persons dietary dogma. They would rather believe people like Jimmy Moore (who, by the way has dealt with weight issues recently oddly enough) and Gary Taubes. These so called experts use anecdotal evidence, epidemiological and rat studies to prove their point. This is the worst type of evidence to believe but they have no problem with that.

I'm a tech geek and like to have a sound reasoning for trying something rather than just poorly supported speculation.

Fantastic post, and truthful. People are best served by following their own path while working within their medical context and needs. We all are different and different nutrition plans work for each of us. I am sure I have been accused of calling those advice-giving folks "Bullies" but I really feel it is unfair when they suggest people are "wrong" because they do not follow the plan they believe is "right" - we are here to support each other in becoming as healthy and fit as possible - however that may happen.

I appreciate this post, thank you! When I started out I discounted calories in/calories out, but then I got to looking at my actual totals and realized that I was averaging around 1000 Kcals/day, and that there might be something to it. I have a question I would like your take on regarding calories; what do you think about the assumption some people make that eating too few calories can cause a stall? Just to qualify my own thoughts, I think it's possible, but it would take a long time. One thing I've figured out on this journey is that when I think I've got something figured out I learn something new that makes me question all of it. Thanks again, CH, and Happy Easter!

I find that passive-aggressive posting occurs in virtually every forum/message board online. Every. Forum. This one is clearly no different.

That said, for a forum without actively involved moderators, this forum runs pretty well. There are a lot of thoughtful, respectful, inquiring, and educated people here with fairly open minds. This is a great place!

I believe one needs to experiment with their diet once you are fairly satisfied with your weight. To me it is adjusting with what you can intake versus weight gain. Also intake at specific time periods, and after dinner, is interesting in relation to your daily weight. I seem to be adjusting my eating patterns to my weight fluctuations each day. I am also varying home diet with eating more calories out. If I eat out, I adjust at home to make up for it.

@philmc-I'm amazed at your progress. You're an inspiration. I dont believe in a true "starvation" mode. The Minnesota starvation study proved that if you cut calories enough you will lose weight. Having read about many theories on weight loss stalls, I think there are 2 that are most plausible. The first is that your body will adjust to your energy intake up to a point. I've personally experienced this. When I was doing 2 high intensity 1 hour runs plus a 2 hour run per week my weight loss slowed and it appeared I needed to burn over 6000 kcals/lb loss. When I measured my metabolism I found that my RMR was down in the 1400's. After adjusting for the metabolic drop the 3500 kcals/lb was pretty close. Eating more definitely raises my RMR up to my theoretical. At least in my case this adaptation could account for an apparent stall. The second theory has to do with cortisol increasing due to the diet and stress. Since cortisol causes water retention this could appear to be a stall as well.

Thanks CH, and I tend to agree with your assessment of starvation mode. I always get a good chuckle when people want to throw starvation mode out there at the first of a diet, not even anywhere near the realm of possibility, yet self-appointed experts swear it's true. Just lol! Thanks again!

well yes this site on FS is full of advice....both good and bad...and i will give you some advice now....when people are advising you to do or about some thing just look at there history food log plus the weight scale and if it is working for them, then they may have some thing to pass on...so many people try to advise an have lost nothing in weight or know nothing about what they are talking about....sorry to be so blunt. Any thing other than that is just there opinion.
