WATERMELON!!! This post is for all of those on here who throw shade to the keto people. I am not throwing shade back & mean nothing demeaning by what I am about to write (I am not that type of person), but I want to try to explain our situation to you all so that you might gain some understanding. For us sugar/carb addicts, insulin resistant & diabetics, keto gives us the best chance in succeeding. Sugar/carbs light up the reward centers of the brain, just like cocaine in everyone. That is a scientific fact. While some people can use cocaine occasionally and with limitations, others are full-blown coke heads. That is the difference between us & you. After dinner last night, I tried to have a cup of watermelon. That led to 3 cups, which led to a shakedown of the entire house searching for sugar. Thankfully, there was none & that was the last of the watermelon. I had an extreme headache, so I called it a night early. I lay in the bed, tossing & turning in pure sweats for hours before I could go to sleep. I woke up several times during the night. After living in & feeding sugar/carb addiction for a while, it puts insulin in overdrive, trying to keep blood glucose down. This is where insulin sensitivity comes from. The next stage is full-blown diabetes. The addiction and insulin resistance is a double whammy. While keto might not be the best option for everyone, it is for people like me. I just don't understand why some of you people can't be more supportive, instead of throwing slurs & shade. Do you think we WANT to live this way?! Can't even enjoy a piece of watermelon for crying out loud...smh. ANYWHOOO... feeling better this morning! 🙂 I hope you ALL have a beautiful day! 😘

Zenus, I'm sorry for your sugar addiction! That sounds really scary to have such a powerful addiction. I just have a few questions... are you type 2 diabetic or type 1? Do you consume artificial sugar, ei diet coke, ect... I think they affect your cravings. I watched the documentary "What the health?" on Netflix a few weeks ago and it blew my mind on information about Diabetes being caused by saturated fats in meats coating the cells and not allowing the cells to absorb sugar causing sugar to stay in the blood. It suggests DM type2 is caused by meat rather than by sugar. It's a fascinating study. I wish you the best!

... and no, ma'am, I don't do artificial sugars often. Only in cases of emergency, like last night.

Thanks, Lady! 💜 I am planning on it, but haven't heard any more about it.

Good morning ZenusWarriorPrincess! I totally understand. One bite of bread and I can go into a full blown carb binge.

@mwalker Thanks for the support! It definitely helps to know that I'm not alone. Even my husband doesn't fully understand. I talked to him on the phone last night & told him what I was going through. His reply was, "that's why you should have only had 1 cup." That's always his response. "Well, you aren't supposed to eat the whole bag...etc". I can't get it through his head that it IS an addiction. Once the monster is turned loose, it's nearly unstoppable.

@Sugar Waffle... Good morning! 🙂 💜 Bread does it for me too. Apparently, just about anything with carbs. I've noticed that if I have more than 5-7 net carbs in a sitting (even veggies), I can feel the monster start to rise.

Glad you are feeling better Zen, as to the hypothesis that saturated fat causes type two diabetes, and considering that from the first 300,000 years of human existence, part of that in an ice age that provided NO plant matter for consumption, saturated fat and meat were the primary food source, type 2 diabetes has only been a major health concern for the last 100 years. I see no causation there at all.

@Deb... Thanks! 💜 Can you imagine meat & fat causing our ancestors to be obese & sick as they try to pursue a kill?? Outlandish...

@ohkaleyeah... you are absolutely right about the plan part. 👌 I looked it up & read that watermelon could be a part of keto as long as it fit into your carb allowance. I should have known from past experiences with different fruits that it wasn't for me.

I feel your pain Zenus. As a pre-diabetic, our only option is to do keto if we want to keep our sugar levels low and avoid bp meds (which have numerous side effects). In my opinion, Keto is the most difficult diet because there are so many healthy things that we also can't consume (or limit) due to the amount of carbs. To anyone giving you a hard time about Keto, just ignore them. My sweet tooth craving usually kicks in after I finish a meal. I've replaced my bad snacks with healthier options. Ex: Instead of eating a snickers or cinnamon roll, I'll have a keto protein bar or a protein shake which satisfies my craving. I use to struggle in the beginning but my routine made it much easier for me to stay consistent. Stay strong Zenus! I'm definitely rooting for you.

Hello ZenusWarriorPrinces. Thanks for your post. My wife has type 2 diabetes. No matter how hard I try to get her to eat sugary sweets, it doesn't work. I'm pretty sure she is insulin resistant now. She has high blood sugar consistently, and no dietician can convince her to change her eating habits. Diabetes runs in her family. I am reading a book by Dr. Attia called Longevity. No diets, in particular, are promoted in the book or maligned, and no judgment. Just straight evidence-based information and advice. good explanations. It makes sense to me. I can totally understand the addiction aspect.

SOrry, to eat less sugary sweets.

@jen... RIGHT ON! 👌🤝

@Swayneman... Thank you for your encouraging words! I wish you all of the best as well! 🙂 Unfortunately, your go to's that you mention also affect me. 😒 Anything sweet tasting is a trigger for me, regardless if it's real sugar or artificial. I have to stick to mostly meat, cheese, butter, lard, bacon grease, and coconut oil. I can have veggies in sparing amounts, but those can be over done for me as well. As I said, 5-7 net carbs in one setting is my absolute limit.

@Diddly... Thanks for sharing! For people like us, there is no "LESS sugary sweets". It's all or nothing. Thinking people like us can have LESS sugary sweets is like thinking a crackhead can smoke just a little crack, or an alcoholic can have JUST one beer. It's just not going to happen! The good thing about keto is that ALL FATS, EXCEPT TRANS FATS can be enjoyed with no guilt. After a few weeks & going through actual withdrawal symptoms (keto flu), all of the cravings go away. ...but just one bite will throw us into a downward spiral. I knew all of this before taking that first bite of watermelon last night, but I did it anyway trying to see how I reacted to different foods. I should have never partaken.

@Diddly... If she would take a look into dietdoctor.com, maybe it would help actually change her mind. ...but as with any addiction, first she must admit she had a problem, and the ultimate choice whether to try to control it is totally hers! Send her 💜 from me!
