Snowwhite100's Journal, 11 Mar 22

Thrilled to be below 130 but admit it's actually impossible for me to lose that much since a pound is 3600 calories and I didn't have a deficit of 2880. It must be water, etc. Also, I had grapes yesterday so am very surprised, thought it might be up a little. Yesterday I took about 6 bags of groceries to the gal that I help with food. She is in very poor shape but I don't help with anything other than groceries. Then I went to Home Depot and bought a bunch of Heirloom seeds for vegetables and 3 fifty-pound bags of washed sand. I saw one video on Youtube with a gentleman using sand as a seed-starter medium. My efforts at growing are not very good and I often forget to water things but I plan to continue trying. My numerous slips of basil are not starting to water root at all and about one-fourth of them died. Maybe they aren't supposed to be in a sunny window. Next time I go to Home Depot I'll buy some of that powder that helps to grow roots. I did tell my husband I bought 3 bags of sand for seed starter and got away with it.

He helped me drill holes near the bottom in the 2 storage containers I bought to make raised beds, rather than in the bottom of them for drainage so tree roots can't grow up into them. Living in Southern California we don't have much rain so I can let some water sit in the bottom. My husband has no idea I hope to have many but am just starting with two. Buying the cheapest ($7. at Walmart) 18 gallon totes that aren't clear (opaque) I will put branches in the bottom hoping the holes won't get clogged with dirt. Then I will mix kitchen scraps with leaves, grass clippings, and shredded paper, and put some compost on the top. There is so much I don't know, but this seems much less expensive than just buying all potting mix. The last 2 weeks I threw out so many kitchen scraps that I was saving for these raised beds because they rotted. I didn't know if I could still use them with fuzzy mold on them. I have no idea how you tell if they have disease. I have been saving all kinds of disposable food containers to start seeds and slips in. Time to start poking holes in the bottoms of those. I bet I am a couple months late in doing this as usual. Like I said I am no farmer. Are you thinking of growing something for hard times ahead?

You are being proactive. I’m in northern NY. I have a compost bin that my husband built for me with pallets. I always grow as many vegetables as I can fit in my garden. A lot of the things I grow I can blanch and freeze. I’ve never tried canning. Best of luck to you!

It’s neat to read about your garden prepping! Yes I prepped 4 massive pots and a bunch of small pots for container gardening last weekend. To cold to plant outside yet may get snow tomorrow! And I pulled out a hedge of dead shrubs and when it dries out enough I will till the mulch and soil I had them in and do some raised beds there. As far as your making compost w/food scraps- have you thought of setting up a compost heap outside? There are very cheap ways of doing it (using free pallets etc) or you could order a closed compost tumbler off Amazon- it’s all contained. I know that you can crunch egg shells and put those right into the pots but I don’t know about other kitchen food scraps/if they are moldy- normally I think you would let it age and decompose before you put it in a pot, but I am def not an expert.

When I was young I kept a 1/3 acre garden. As I got older, I discovered raised bed gardening -- so much less work! Sure does help with the grocery bills, and healthier too, if you garden organically. Patio gardens in pots can also provide a surprising amount of healthy, less expensive veggies. Best of luck with your storage container garde!

Time wise you should be ok since you are in California and don't have to worry about short growing season due to frost. I'm in Iowa and in late September/October our growing season ends due to frost. I started plants 1-2 months ago depending how fast they grow. A few things I wish I hadn't started so soon as they are getting quite big in little containers and I got at least a month before I can transplant to the garden before temperature stays above freezing. I grew up on a farm so I been around plants/garden all my life. You will do fine just plant your seeds, give them sun and water and they should start to grow.

Thank you all for your encouragement. @REMCarter some members here on FS think it is inappropriate to talk about things other than diet-related. In the past, I used FS to let out some of my frustration in my living circumstances. This time I want to encourage others to grow some things, anything they can eat. There is no way you could know without much reading of my past journals that I have a very bad back and can not mix or turn a compost pile. I was born with fractures of the L5 vertebrate that never healed and now I have 3 buldging disks. We own a tumbler but I cannot turn it by myself. Frankly, when I said in this journal that I "got away with it" regarding bringing sand home, my husband said almost a year ago he would shoot me if I brought anything other than food home. He does not hit me, but grabs my clothes and throws or pushes me around. Not much of anyone will see this comment, maybe even you won't come back here, but even so, I'm not sure I should be so frank. I did tell some of this last year when I was very upset and became afraid of him. Some members here were very negative to me, and I admit it hurt. He is turning 86, has heart failure, terminal cancer, memory loss plus many other problems. At 80 and loving the Lord, I am not afraid to die but do not want to be hurt. I am trying my best to finish my course with honor and not antagonize him. If I try to walk away he becomes enraged and probably dangerous. He has been narcissistic for years but his small strokes have probably made it worse. He has not been diagnosed with dementia but if your loved one had Alzheimer's would you throw them out on the street or just walk out on them. He is still physically strong and would never stay in a "facility". If he went to jail or a facility they would have to tie him down and drug him. I can't do that. Yes, I am nervous about my future for many reasons. So far, I am living day to day by the grace of the Lord, and I know He is carrying me. I could not do this on my own. I had no intention of getting into this. I guess I got on a roll, and have no other outlet than FS, and it just pops out. I'm trying to keep many balls under the water of the swimming pool in my head. Sorry about this. Back to gardening...

Good luck with your gardening project. It sounds like ageing is a difficult process for your husband. You might be able to get some guidance on the dementia question. Ask his doctor, or a counselor at the local senior center. I know two families who had an Alzheimer's affected family turn violent against other family members, so it is a symptom to be taken seriously. Best wishes to you both!

Nobody knows the extent of the abuse you suffer there, and have endured for most of your life! Thank you for reminding me that your prayer needs are still very real. I will put you and your husband back on the prayer list at our little church. Hang in there. So interesting to hear about your gardening endeavors.

we made aluminum raised beds put down cardboard then some straw we have and the container of compost. when I put the compost on I got to the bottom and there was a humongous carrot or sweet potato that hasn't decomposed at all. we are going to buy some dirt to put on then more straw to keep the moisture in. I have a small greenhouse I've been trying to get tomatoes started but no luck. but I have lots of peas started.

@snowwhite100, I hadn’t read your journal, and this is my first time back to FS since they have all this social connection stuff- last time I used it to lose quite a bit of weight it was just a logging app, so I’m new to this. I had no idea of your health issues, so my suggestions were pretty general. They do have small counter top composters now that maybe could work for your needs, but I don’t know how pricey they are. I wish you the best with your relationship with your hubby and will send prayers your way for sure. I cast all my concerns on the Christ within who strengthens me. In a former job I connected with a lot of community resources and helped clients access them. I’m sure Ca is way more advanced in those kind of programs than my area, but maybe start with the Department of aging and disability for community resources that could help. I think community and support are the most important aspect of managing tough situations, and it’s important to reach out for help when you need it. You could even get help with your gardening projects through local programs. Wishing you the best 💜

Hey there Snow White, just popping in to say "Hi" and I hope you're doing well. I might start a garden this year too but I'm working on a retaining wall because my yard is sloped and the walkway is eroding into the garden area. So first things first but I hear you can plant in all kinds of containers. That's a great idea! I was pricing wooden raised beds and they are so expensive! But Walmart does seem to be a little cheaper. I have problems with tree roots too. I like the idea of having a bottom on the bed. I wonder if a plastic garbage bag or sheet of plastic would help. I imagine you'd have to replace that and the soil every few years if the tree roots start growing into them. Hmmm...I usually get miracle grow garden soil and mix in steer manure which you can buy at home depot too. But I think manure is too rich for some garden plants and I wouldn't grow my root vegetables in them. I'm not a very experienced gardner but I'm learning a few things about what leaf colors problems mean in terms of needed nutrients and how some vegetables don't like to be too hot or they start to flower instead of bearing their produce. It's all very scientific! I find alot of information by watching youtube videos. It's a fun little hobby i think! Keep us posted on your progress!
