Snowwhite100's Journal, 27 Jan 22

We have a custom camping conversion for an extended mini-van we intend to let go of even though the wood itself is probably worth $1,000.00 by itself, maybe more, what do I know? Our Sienna burned up a couple of years ago moving our daughter to Arizona. My husband didn't notice the red light came on, and because of my husband's health we did not replace it. He is on a C-pap machine and oxygen at night and usually a couple of hours each day and now has been diagnoised with cancer. He is 86 and I am 80, and with my bad back, our camping days are over. We do have a cabin in the mountains but there is electricity there so he can get by. The conversion fits in through the back door of the van and can come out whenever desired. The setup consists of a raised sleeping deck that a full-size air mattress fits on with divisions and lids for either 13 standard size cardboard file boxes to fit into for clothing and gear or we used 9 of the slots for boxes and left the rest of the open area (has access from the side door) for large items like a big tent, big lounge chairs, stove, and a couple of small tables. For the back is a wonderful (33" tall x 17" deep) cabinet that goes from side to side (4') for 2 deep and 2 shallow giant plastic boxes to fit in. The inside bottom of the cabinet even has 2 pull-out "breadboards" we sometimes used to prepare our food and ate on. The cabinet is low enough to be able to see out the back window from the driver's seat. There are lift lids on the top of this cabinet for storage in the top also. Everywhere we went and camped everyone always wanted to see our setup because it is so unique and well built. My husband was an excellent finish carpenter. At night my husband would move the front seat forward to make more foot room than there was with the standard length of a full-sized mattress. There are also pleated darkening drapes for the van that slide on curtain rods to put them on. The drapes and rods come with it too. It breaks my heart to not go camping anymore, especially to Yosemite. Twice we went for 3 months traveling up north or to the east coast. My husband made a pully system for our garage to pull the deck up to the ceiling for storage when we weren't camping so our van could be just a regular van the rest of the year, and this big deck isn't in our way in the garage. The cabinet fits on the side of our garage just fine so we could still pull the van or car into the garage. If you are interested and live close enough to Los Angeles to be convenient, private message me with your telephone number. I have no idea how long it will take me to find any pictures of it set up in our van but I guess I could show it in our garage. I hadn't even thought to ask him if he wants to sell the long Thule box we used on top of the van. It won't fit on my car. We also have the “mid” seat from the van in our attic that was never used. Getting old isn't for sissies.

That sounds like an awesome van set-up. I'm sorry that you two are past using it, but I hope someone else can take it adventuring again. You've got some good memories !

May the Lord bless with a good family to get your beloved van. Sounds very interesting!

We revamped a GMC extended van a few years ago and took a two month trip around the perimeter of the US. We removed the liner and insulated walls, floor, and ceiling, installed two crank open windows on the roof and reinstalled liner before building a bed platform that held a queen size mattress. There was plenty of room under for big plastic boxes of cooking gear, etc. We took our two little Pomeranians along with us and without a definitive itinerary, wandered around taking in the sights. We camped, stayed in motels when we had to do laundry, and visited with family and friends. It was great fun but we eventually sold the van and gave most of our camping gear to my daughter and her family. Nothing lasts forever but I'm glad that we did the trip when we did.

Snowwhite, thank you for your comment on my post; our loved ones are never really gone as long as we remember them. I think you should post whatever you like, it's your journal and you it's your life. Those who judge might want to remember "let he who is without sin caste the first stone" or perhaps, "judge not, lest ye be judged." My depression is not severe, just a result of too much isolation. I comment on it because I am usually an "up" person, so it isn't a normal state for me. I appreciate your kindness and your support. 💛💛
