I found that when I started exercising I put on weight before I started losing it - this is because I was gaining muscle. As for the diet, it really depends on what suits a person better - what works for me, might not work for you and vice versa. It also depends on what sort of diet you are doing; short term 'fad' diets never work long term and you actually end up gaining more weight after you stop the diet. Just eat healthy and in moderation and all will be well - your friend will see the results once her body is used to the changes.
