moufette123's Journal, 17 Apr 21

I regained more than last week's weight loss. I did not eat more or snack more, if I recall well. I guess it happens.

My blood pressure is getting worse, as usual. On Sunday, it was 140/80, then decreased gradually for the following days into the 130s and high 120s (I note my systolic more because my diastolic tends to follow). Then on Thursday, for no specific reason, it went back up to the 140s and has remained there since, including this morning. Before taking a reading, I sit down for a few minutes and am usually relaxed. Then, I put on my cuff. It's after pressing the Start button that I can feel my heart beating faster and harder; I can even feel my blood pressure rising when this happens. When the monitor stops, I immediately feel better and less stressed, but I can then see the high reading.

I am not doing anything differently from when my BP used to be at a more normal range. I have to accept that it means that I have to either have my ARB (-sartan) dosage increased, or add a third drug. My CCB (amlodipine) is already at its maximum dosage. Problem is, the doctor's office is unreachable by phone (line always busy) and the online appointment service emailed me to advise that the clinic has not given any appointment. I may have to take leave at work just to go in person, but I would rather avoid going there unnecessarily because COVID variants are more contagious, more deadly with a higher chance for complications than the original COVID; and we have a couple of those variants in our local community. And I am still waiting for my anemia test results and the clinic has not called me.

Now I have confirmation from the media and a government website that only people with severe chronic disease who are treated or followed up at the hospital (cancer, severe allergies or immunosuppression, kidney dialysis, organ transplants) can get a vaccine. People with heart or lung disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, sickle cell anemia, Down syndrome, or more than one medical condition cannot get vaccinated unless a pharmacist deems a specific case urgent. And it is only with AstraZeneca. Essential workers can be vaccinated, and of course grocery workers don't count. The rest of the under 55 population will be vaccinated as the last priority -- eventually.

Besides, Canada has trouble receiving mRNA vaccines (many delays), which are more effective and do not have that specific clotting issue adenovirus-based vaccines have. Of course, COVID has a higher risk of clots, but it would be a shame to suffer from this clotting from an adenovirus vaccine, while being not as well protected against COVID and not at all against the variants, compared to the mRNA vaccines.

The sun has come back, which feels great after two rainy days!

It’s very common to stress out during a blood pressure reading. I do the same. I try not to worry quite so much about the number and concentrate on the trend. If it’s heading downwards, even with the test anxiety, it’s going in the right direction!
