It amazes me how human we are. We know a pound of humanity weighs almost 3600 calories, but we vacillate on our opinion about that very pound. We are thrilled when our weight goes down even a little bit, even if the calories we consumed the day before can't account for it. We look the other way and accept the progress even if we don't understand it. We even accept compliments of how hard we have worked. But maybe our food deficit may have only been one to several hundred calories the day before, making it an impossibility that our hard work of only one day achieved this new marker. Then we are tempted to dismay when the scale goes back up, and maybe even higher in the next day or so. Maybe because I've lived longer than most of you on FS, I am more used to this phenomenon, but even I am tempted: therefore more human than most of you. I do see comments here, in solace and comfort, that it is probably water weight, and yes that is probably a big part of it. Recently I wrote a message to someone here on FS, who went a month or two or three with no budge on the scale, when there was clearly an average deficit in their calories consumed. Their tenacity and good humor was inspiring, and over a period of about two years they lost a very lot of weight, and now are on maintenance. What a wonderful example to all of us to be patient, when we know we are doing the good thing.

@Snowwhite100, you are certainly "as human as the rest of us"! I'm so glad you shared your observations of and perspective on reactions and responses to a pound (or so) lost or gained. Thank you! Each person's "mental weight" is, indeed, a 100% struggle to him or her. And, I was as distressed about how "fat" I was at 145 lbs. as I was at 285 lbs. Every pound lost was a "victory"; every one lost a "defeat." Body image is a source of emotional burden for so many of us!
