Day 2 of a planned 2 day Fast

Perhaps it is all good news...

I was able to go an entire day and only drink water, green tea (with Splenda®), and home made bone broth. Except for the Splenda®, Dr. Fung would totally approve :) Total carbs for the day, 2 carbs! For the first time, a TRUE 'water fast'. This morning I even lost a pound :) Success right?

Not so fast...

Before I went to bed I got on the scale. I was up 2 pounds!

WTF?? Ok water retention. What else is going on? Now, I usually don't do this, but before bed I took a blood glucose reading... 159! This is insane. No food, no sugar, walked 17k steps for the day, and my blood sugar is this high? What is causing it? Could it be one cup of bone broth? Could it be the low carb bread still digesting in my stomach from the BBQ on Wednesday?

Whatever the problem. High insulin = weight gain.

It wasn't until this morning, after a peaceful night sleep, that I thought that perhaps the mega dose of liquid melatonin I take every night could be the culprit.

I looked at the ingredients. After water, the number one ingredient is... "cane juice crystals", look that up and it is... SUGAR (https://n.pr/2J3vNLa) (sigh).

So each night, during my longest fasting stretch while sleeping, I have been dosing myself with mega doses of sugar?! Even this morning I woke up with a reading of 93 (during fasting I should be around 78).

Well, I hope this is the culprit. I will now take this 'as directed' rather than the mega doses (that really knock me out and allow me to sleep sooo soundly).

I'm going to have to wait until next weeks fast to do a real test because I break my current fast tonight.

Hmm, it will interesting to see if that was the culprit. (you can get melatonin in capsule or tablets, I think.) Good job on cutting the carbs and drinking water.

Good job figuring out the culprit! Yesterday I checked my supplements and they are clean. I now have to check my melatonin supps.

I had to check my vitamins too when I started this...sugar is everywhere!

If you are diabetic you need carbs to actually BALANCE your blood glucose levels. Fasting can actually have negative effects on your sugar levels. It works for someone who has normal blood sugars, but not for a diabetic. There are many great carbs found in vegetables too. :-)

That's an input of sugar that you don't need.

@Becc@ - Taken 'as directed' the melatonin 'may' be ok. I love a solid nights sleep and I have a painful tennis elbow that has been bothering me so I was taking 10x the recommended dose to 'knock me out'.

@momma6224 - Agreed! And my 'mega dosing' on the melatonin and the Splenda just makes it wayyy worse :(

@minitata - Yeah, drinking 'liquid sugar' right before bedtime sounds like a really bad idea, huh? :) I apparently did not do this every night because I have had morning fasting in high 70's. Yes I am aware of the 'dawn effect' that will naturally elevate my blood sugar to 'get ready for the day', but 93! Thank god for te blood glucose monitor so I had some idea of what the heck was going on...

@lsherm - I am not positive I *am* diabetic (it just runs in the family). However, if I was, I would follow this protocol of regular fasting. Keep in mind I recently lost 30lbs. Fasting works REALLY WELL :)

@ LSherm. Sorry, but you are categorically wrong wrt Type 2. That's the nonsense spouted by the ADA and the rest of the $40+ Billion diabetes industry and exactly what keeps people on all their meds. Dr Fung's practice has a clinical record with >5,000 patients treated with fasting many of whom have been cured of Type 2. There's a guy in Costa Rica who has a 100% success rate curing diabetes with a 21 day fast. There are many many more examples with real clinical data, and tons of anecdotal evidence, including many on this site who have self cured and are tossing their meds as we type.

Always read the labels ☝️😁 they hide sugar so good this days by giving it other different names. When last winter I’ve read about connection between diabetes and fasting, I’ve advised to my parents (both have 2 type) to fast at least 13 hrs from evening to morning- they used to have Greek yogurt with bread at 22-00. So they removed all these 22 o’clock snacks, and got good results just in a few days! After they decided to reduce meat in their menu, and now their sugar levels are normal (still go higher always after meat or night snacks). It’s just to say that fasting is really working for diabetes 👍😊

@jimmiepop Interesting! I'm not diabetic and haven't really looked into this so I don't have much expertise. But I am really curious and have a biomed background. Do you have info on particular study authors or even particular studies that could get me started on the science of this? Thanks!

@adef Good catch! Have you tried the red light trick for melatonin? It wouldn't give you a mega dose but might get you enough to fall asleep.

@oberlin078 - Thanks for that. Gotta see if my wife will go for it however...

@oberlin078 - On the T2 Diabetes see: "The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally" (Jason Fung)

@Honeybunny90210 - I have had great results from extended multi-day fasting so far. When I hit my goal I plan to switch to an IF (Intermediate Fasting) like your parents.

@Isherm - nobody 'needs' carbohydrates. There are essential fatty-acids and essential amino-acids (protein) but no essential carbohydrates, you can get everything you need from protein & fat. I'm an (ex) type 2 diabetics and nmy blood glucose has improved to reversing my diabetes since I gave up fruit and veg. Dr. Bernstein who is, I think, the longest lived type 1 diabetic - he's 84 yrs of age - doesn't eat any fruit and very little in the way of veg - all carbohydrate turns into sugar inside of you.
