chesgreen's Journal, 10 Jan 18

Lately, my actions have been inconsistent with my words so I will lay low with journal entries while I get them aligned. I've been struggling with the education matters of a special needs child for 4 weeks now and it is chipping away at my rough exterior. I have huge swings on the scale and it is a little frustrating. (206 - 216, 205 - 212.) Stress is probably behind it.

Log everything, you bite, you write. I've done that and kind of got sick of logging, logging, logging. I do realize the importance of it and personally, I think I have to become routine with what I eat from 7 AM - 6:30 PM M - F. They way I believe I can accomplish this routine is by cooking a bunch of what ever protein to be eaten during the work week on Sundays and storing them in individual containers to be combined with with spring mix salad and bring them into the office each day. In one of my office drawers, I have a bottle of extra virgin olive oil. In the evening I will introduce a little variety with a different protein from what I consumed earlier in the day and maybe hot veggies with some blue cheese dressing.

Sounds like a plan? Well, if this doesn't work, as soon I pull up in my driveway in the evenings, I will go into the dark woods guided by the flashlight on my phone, seek out, pick up and place some strange animal poop into the container I brought to work that day. Then when I finally sit and eat my dinner, If I dare go for the cookies or chips afterwards, I will be forced open up that container and smear that excrement onto the snacks. Ewwwww grossss!!!

That will discourage me for sure if I don't get my act together. I am good most of the day and then when I get in, Mr Hyde comes out.

That is my plan. (Wednesday's chicken thighs and salad is in my office fridge and I have 4 more thighs left at home, 2 for Thursday and 2 for Friday)

Onwards.

Log everything, every day - even when you cheat. It's the only thing that works for me. Sorry about the stress Ches. Take care.

Hi Ches, stress raises havoc in so many ways. There is a solution, with balance and exercise. Taking care of your child is commendable, I don't think you give yourself enough credit. Your a great warm person you take your responsibilities in stride as "that's what you do" but not everyone does. You have the answers inside you. You will succeed❤️

I think it's a journey not a destination give yourself love and a pat on the back because you are here all the sidelines and frustration has been always at hand, you can challenge your choices and be mindful of the consequences, be happy and true to self.

Do you use the app on your phone to log? 💁🏻‍♀️ If you don’t, you can! It helps to have it right there as you are putting it in your face and looking at how many calories and/or carbs etc. are left for the day and how what you are eating will effect your macros. 🤷🏻‍♀️And sometimes you just don’t give a rip and have to go on from there. A big bowl of salad in the fridge right in front with tasty additions like tomatoes and cucumbers spiced and set in the top in a smaller bowl so they don’t wilt the salad ... a few seeds and broccoli slaw and watered dressing and a stomach can be filled that is munchie to snack for 100 or 200 calories or less, most of it being the dressing. 🙋🏻‍♀️Good luck with your son. The stress unfortunately will always be there, but you are meeting it with grace, style and love.

It is a struggle every day to log. (BTW, I love the "I bite, I write" phrase) With that being said, my family has been doing meal planning on Friday or Saturday and then we cook meals for the week on Sunday. I believe that makes us more accountable to ourselves, and as a busy mom of twins involved in allthesports, it is so much easier. No more are we hitting up the drive through on our way to or from practice. We started this journey as a way to save money, but watching the scale go down is a bonus =) You can do it!

Have you ever thought of just maintaining your weight for a while? Pick a weight range and just work on maintaining within that range.

If we could figure out how to stop going into grazing mode as I call it we could make a gazillion dollars!!!

I like Egull1's suggestion of maybe trying to maintain awhile since you are going through a hard stress time. It may ease the pressure to lose and really there is nothing wrong with maintenance, especially since that seems to be the biggest challenge for many of us. It may give you some confidence that you can maintain even during difficult times. Hang in there! I too, love the "I bite, I write". You are a cool guy!

I'm with you Chas...I do great during the day..a will of iron and a laser focus on my goals...but as soon as I get home all that melts away...I am frustrated by this and am working on ways to change these habits that work to derail my path towards my goals...

Chess I hope things calm down with your son. Sometimes life just isn't under our control and we can't focus all our attention on our diet and exercise routine. Sounds like you have a plan though. I like the idea of cooking up your needed protein in advance. I tried it a while back with small portions of chicken, pork chops and hamburger patties cooked on my George Foreman grill. Problem was, every time I'd get a portion for myself I had dogs and cats begging me for their share, so it didn't last very long. Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way. Love reading your posts.

Thanks all. I can't wait to look back at this post in a few months to talk about these character building moments. A diamond is in the making for sure. I will keep calm and keep moving on.

We all get "diet fatigue" sometimes. I gave up logging for 8 weeks - I needed a break.

OMGosh, you made me laugh. Chessy, have you considered making an appointment with the people who oversee the special needs department of your child's school district? You might get some assistance there.

Logging sucks, but when you gain weight and THINK you are doing everything correctly it is the logging that tells the real story. You hang in there, don't eat emotionally, eat to satiate your hunger. I have a child on the Autism spectrum so I think I know a little bit of what you may be going through. Wishing you the best

I noticed some time ago that you have a lot on your plate and I'm not talking dinner plate. You have been doing a fantastic job on many fronts. Hang in there. We all have a right to get tired from time to time. It's not easy but worth it all. I suggest that you continue tracking your food intake and activity. I also suggest that you streamline your eating plans and shoot for a sustainable diet within a calorie range that works for you...
