bowd65's Journal, 28 Nov 16

So after a good morning walk and swimming, i decided to call into work to take in the balance for this Saturday's Christmas ight out. All was going well til i mentioned about the reduction of my hours on return to work in January. The ward manager informed me that i can't possibly drop my hours as there are too many hours that she is unable to cover and it may be some time. But she will discuss this with me at the human resources sickness review meeting. Just wonderful!

Make them an offer. Reduced hours or you don't go back until you are 100%. I think you may get your reduced hours!

She can't refuse reduction in hours. Speak to your GP. You might get a return to work form that states the hours that you should be doing after surgery . Check this out . Keep us informed She really shouldn't be putting pressure on you right now. You tell her that you have got us here at FS.. and we will haunt her lol 🌟🌟🌟

I live the advice that Jocko gave you as well.x

I believe there's some legal requirement when you've been ill to be allowed reduced hours on your return. As well as the doctor, it might be worth checking with Citizens Advice.

Thanks for your support Jocko , but i had already said that i would go back on Jan the 3rd. So then after she dropped the bombshell. This is because they are unable to recruit any more nurses (NHS) and have used so much agency that no one can reduce their hours at present . So i am in a no-win situation. I have annual leave to take before end of March, but then will have to go back to full time. My only option would be to look for another post with less hours.

Yes Doobrie i can go back on a phased return for a couple of weeks and then se my annual leave. But the sister says she can't reduce my hours. I will try citizens advice tomorrow, thanks 😊

Thanks Mr M, i can only plead my case at the sickness review meeting next week with the personel officer. Maybe i might get somewhere.

Could you go back full hours but put in 'admin' hours - i.e., doing the paperwork that needs to be done - so you can sit down and work in quiet? I haven't worked on a hospital ward for many years so I'm not sure if this is a feasible option or not. Stand your ground though Bowd, you have to put your health first. I'm up for the haunting Mrs M!

I think she will have to let you work less hours, and get some help from somewhere else if she needs it. The hospital will be obliged to provide someone, even if means agency cover, so it's nonsense for her to say she can't get anyone.

I don't think i would be allowed to do admin ST, they need hands on nurses for direct patient care and it is rehabilitation so us nurses are very hands on. Heidi i will definitely be arguing my case next week, but i may just have to wait for them to recruit other nurses before i can reduce my hours. Although if it does have an impact on my health, i will refer myself back to occupational health and something will have to be done. We shall see what happens at the sickness review meeting. Thank you all for your support x

Get your GP onside, speak to Citizens Advice and maybe even a free consultation with an employment lawyer. Be wary of speaking with HR though - they're employed to support the employer, not employees in my experience. Collect evidence and record notes of every conversation. It sounds drastic, I know, but you have to protect your health. All the best, B!

I will be speaking to my GP before Christmas and going to speak with Citizens advice. I will also be speaking with occi helth who have appeared to be in my side since i first went off sick. I won't go down without a fight first, but i will have to be careful as i have to work alongside the sister and i don't want to alienate myself

Spelt your name incorrectly in ST's journal. My apologies. Phone gives me predictive text x

No probs Mrs M. Thanks Phooka, I have been on to Citizens advice. They are emailing me some info. I am going to phone the Royal College of Nursing tomorrow as well!
